i have installed a new 40 gig hard drive in my computer,
but still have another drive that is on the verge of
failing that i would like to slave before it actually
dies. the old drive will only boot to safe mode, but
does so regualarly enough that i think i have limited
time to transfer my files to the new drive. any advice
for a semi beginner when it comes to the internals of a
computer. thanks a lot. cbb

Get yourself a program called Acronis Migrate-Easy - http://www.acronis.com/products/migrateeasy/ ... If you manage to get it installed and working, it will create an identical copy of your current (failing) hard drive onto the spangly new one. Provided the current state of the drive isn't such that it is corrupting your data, you should find yourself with a properly working computer within the hour.

Once the "migration" is complete, it is simply a case of switching the master / slave jumpers over on the backs of your drives.

Hope this helps

Do a clean install of XP onto the new drive.. change the jumper on the back
of the old drive to the 'slave' position.. connect it to the second pluf of
the IDE cable and then connect power to it.. copy over whatever you want to
save..
