I want to use external HDD Western Digital WD_BLACK, 3.5", 1 TB, 7200 rpm, Cache Size 64 MB, WD1003FZEX. I will connect it to computer via ORICO USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station. OR-6619US3-BK. I run Windows 10 Home 64-bit.

I will write usually from computer to external HDD system backups, usually current sound work files backups, time after time sound work files archive updates when accomplished sound files, accomplished projects will go to archive.

System backups will be images. One system backup - one file. I will make system backup using Windows archiving tool. May be it is better to use some other tool for making system backups?

Current sound work files and sound work files archive will be many files with different size. It will be WAV files 100 MB, 200 MB, 1 GB. Also it will be many WAV files 3 MB, 5 MB. Also it will be many MIDI files 1 KB, 2 KB.

How is correct to write to external HDD current sound work files and sound work files archive? To make images which will unite a lot of files? Next step to write images to external HDD?

If I will not make images but will write to external HDD a lot of small files will it be bad for external HDD? And will it be bad for files?

What to make right after purchasing HDD? To format it using NTFS? Next to use some diagnostic software to check HDD surface, sectors, clusters? Next step to use some diagnostic software to check write speed, read speed, temperature of HDD?
