I'm going to assume you are playing from the side that needs to escort the payload, if you are on the defensive your strategy is simply going to be to stop the other team from staying near the payload at all times.
Step 1)Get to the payload and get it under your control.
When first start the match the payload is going to be sitting right at your door, and the enemy team will be spawning pretty far away from it, so getting it under your control shouldn't be too hard to start. Get a tank right on the objective and it will start moving if there are no enemies near it, so it should just be a simple matter of pushing the enemy off the objective right off the start.
Step 2)Keep as many people on the objective as possible.
This mechanic isn't something I noticed until I had played this kind of game a couple of times, it isn't very intuitively displayed. The more people you have on the objective when there are no enemies around, the faster it will move towards your destination. If it is currently moving and not contested, get on it and get it there quicker.
Step 3)Prevent the enemy team from taking control of the payload.
Just like you can move the payload towards it's destination, the enemy team can take control of it and will start moving it back towards the start of the map if they fully control it and no one on your team is near enough to contest the movement. Stay on that objective or you could lose any progress your team has made.
Ideally, you are going to want tanks for escort matches, because you need people who can stand out in the open on the objective and stay on it to keep it moving. If your team doesn't have enough tanks to keep it moving, it might be a good idea to switch to one yourself.
