How Will AMD stay alive?

You can only do so much with limited funds however. AMD spends about 9% of their budget on advertising, intel 10%. It just so happens that intel's far higher income leads to AMD appearing to be underadvertised. Really, what else can they do?

How about this scenario... M$ decides that Win 7 needs to get better battery usage. Biggest battery drain is the CPU, followed by the GPU. Intel makes both, and already makes both in ULV packages. So M$ goes to Intel and asks'how can we optimize this even further?' Why not AMD? At this point in time, in the ULV segment they are a far, far second place.

Good point. :) AMD should sue Intel for out-advertising them. Then join forces with Rambus to sue them for something else.

How about this scenario...M$ decides that there is a bottom level of graphical capability that they will be held back on, and intel GMA doesn't make the cut.

With ARM and Linux looking ever more viable, M$ need to choose their allies with a bit more care than 'who has best battery life', especially since ARM is miles ahead of intel in that very department.

Sounds like a plan to me tbh. I'm still waiting on AMD's lawsuit but I guess they are waiting on the delaware result so thats at least 5 years before we can spam the forum with that particular thread. 😀

While I don't disagree, M$ is in a numbers game. Whether or not, no matter how lousy, Intel's integrated graphics have the numbers. ARM? Again, Intel's CPU's have the numbers. 400KG gorillas tend to play with other 400KG gorillas.

Our local IGA went out of business, simply because they couldn't compete with Coles Now we will soon also have a Woolies. But no new IGA in sight. Fair? Not in my opinion, but I can't remember the last time the ACCC asked for my opinion...

I know they have the numbers, but if all it came down to was numbers then everybody else might as well give in.

M$ and Intel *could* play a game of retarding tech and hoping nobody notices, but sooner or later something really bad could happen (to them) to upset it.

45nm is no longer like black magic to most companies - ARM are on it and doing wonders for example (mostly because they aren't being held back by x86). If M$ and Intel play a game of slowing progress then they might wake up one day to a serious contender, something far more than they have right now.

Look at how Apple revitalised themselves overnight almost. There are a lot of companies just waiting to be the next big thing, neither Intel or M$ can afford to get cocky with their monopoly. Thankfully. :)

There are a lot of precarious new alliances forming too. Intel have to support linux because they can't have AMD and ARM grabbing it all for themselves. That must be causing some friction between M$ and Intel...but it's just business.

AMD love to be seen in bed with M$, but they can't get away from open source which is the thing M$ hate most. Nvidia are desperate to sell their gpu's at the same time they are in a war with intel over atom and ion. Apple need to be seen to have the best parts yet they got burned by Nvidia's dodgy bumpgate so they are now seen using 'unfashionable' ATI parts.

It's a helluva lot more complicated than most people realise, and on many different fronts.

I know this may be overstated, but I think AMD is safe. Their value is pretty well their whole strength.

I looked at some i7s and Core 2's when building my computer, not only did the CPUs cost more, the motherboards were also more expensive, and what alot of people also seem to forget is that AMD has alot more compatibility. I could go get my AM2+ board and stick the PII in it! Maybe benchmarks aren't the way the market is going. Builders and benchmarkers are probably a smaller part of the market, where as the average computer user will buy a cheaper computer, or a computer that has "performance". AMD is cheaper, and obviously intel has the top CPU... so there you have it, AMD is probably going to be around longer than you think.

*ignores all post* x86 needs to die, seriously.
If that happens AMD can start fresh while Intel will be farked as they're too deeply rooted into x86.

*dreams on*

Yup... 'Dream' is correct.
Intel bought 64 bit tech from whomever after DEC collapsed... Never could manage to do anything with it. I've never seen a true M$ app ported to native 64 bit. Apple gave up on 64 bit. But it IS a nice dream, sort of, if your idea of a good dream is every coder's nightmare.

LOL - well I'm glad somebody could get rich off of Tom's forums!

Anyway, according to the info link under my avatar, I only have 1251 posts, so even if I said it once per post, that would only be - hold on, lessee now - um, twelve hundred & fifty-one dollars??

Oops with this one make that 1252 posts, but notice I didn't say anything about you-know-who in this post 😀.

Hmm, I seem to recall AMD tooting on and on about 'native quad core' a couple years back 😀.

If you can't beat 'em, make something very similar and claim it's not the same! Then everyone wins

Yep. I'm fairly certain that if AMD couldda figured out how to make MCM work with HTT, they'd have done it and started selling some quad CPUs instead of having to resort to throwing bricks at Intel 😀.

Or maybe they just like throwing bricks with their pants, skivvies & sox all down around their ankles [:rocket_sauce:1]

Sure - that's why Magny Cours will be the 'smarter' MCM whereas C2Q was just a double chezebooger, as we all know by now 😀.

Well TGIF once again & mentioning "Cours" above makes me thirsty for a Heineken 😀.
