If only Intel added ECC RAM support to Lynnfield I'd be able to create all kinds of specialised uber-efficient devices based on x86.
But now that purpose looks much more suited to Athlon/Phenom II X2-4 especially with the imminent price drop to react against Lynnfield.

AMD 1, Intel 0

You made a thread containing the word "AMD" and "doomed".

This is normal.

Might decide to skip Athlon II to Phenom II X2 and try and unlock the extra cores.

The ACC 785G is about the cheapest mobo you can buy.

AMD is about lower end. Intel is higher end.

Both are good buys.

But don't forget the motherboards and their features.

Right now, i5 is in my favour because of an awesome P55 matx mobo.

Oh, good for them.

Darn... AMD Athlon II or Core i5... can't decide!

Hmm... are you suggesting a move towards server-like chipsets?

Welcome back caamsa ... youngster ... lol.

AMD punched up through $5 today ...

So much for the "AMD is doomed" folk here ...

I think AMD still has a few tricks up their sleeve ... not that I really know anything ...

I still think a decent really low voltage X2 with a 1Mb per core fast L2 and an L3 that can be switch off on the fly when idle is what AMD really need now to bundle with their platofrm approach for notebooks ... that market is theirs for the taking if they can push it along.

Yep, given the steep rise of AMD stocks recently, AMD's market cap is now at ~3.5 billion.

Also, the market currently values Intel at ~110 billion. Go figure what this implies for the market's expectations about growth prospects for Intel and AMD...

More to lose when it all goes pear shaped. All AMD need do is release one cpu that is faster than intels best and intel will lose billions upon billions, and thousands of jobs too no doubt.

That is all it takes, and is all it will ever take.

That's because ATIC (parent company of GF) is trying to buy Chartered, not because of anything AMD or GF have done.

However it was a nice gain for AMD stockholders :).

LOL - and that's the trick. Doncha think AMD has been desperately trying to do just that since Core2 handed them their arses 3 years ago?

BTW, why are you posting as James33 over on AMDZone and trying to get Smyrgyl there banned as being me?? 😀. I have never registered at UAEZone, simply because I won't give official support to such a biased site...

That increase is from it's fab division.

Yea I agree, as long as ATI can bring it with some attracting prices I thing they can out-sell Nvdia but it wont be easy... who knows what Nvdia will bring to the table this time, hopefully both companies will give us something to brag about.... Im just thinking this time ATI might have an advantage due to all the speculation and rumors....

Intel is introducing Core i5 and Core i3 for mid and value segments, which will give another blow to AMD's processor line-up. AMD does fail to introduce new technologies and architectures (as 45nm chips were supposed to be released on 2008, but at last it was on 2009) in the meantime Intel introduces architectures which keeps AMD behind. Is not AMD taking lessons?? Who knows....

I think AMD should present a technology like Hyperthreading which is revived in Core i7 and gives performance boost in many applications. Also more efficient architecture is a requirement.

From the beginning I am loyal to AMD. See the list of my system processors from 2000 to present:

K6-II, K6-III
Duron 750MHz
Athlon Thunderbird 1.3GHz
Athlon 64 3200+
Athlon 64 X2 6000+
Phenom II X4 940

But how long should I be loyal, as Intel is introducing far more efficient processors these days??

Please AMD, do you have any answer????

I'd have to agree that it looks like the AMD/ATI cards are excellent, esp. the upcoming DX11 ones, and I'll probably go with them for my next build which now looks like an i7-860. Might spend more on the GPU since I plan a single-card system.

In the past I alternated between nVidia and ATI cards - both had advantages & drawbacks, but this time around it's looking like ATI FTW! :)

I have no idea what you're going on about fazers, but then again nothing new there 😀

I am not registered with any other website except this one and considering how often i post here I'm not sure where i would find the time anyway.

Nice try though...if a bit weirder than usual.

AMD fazers, AMD. You can say it, it's ok 😀

You mean to say AMD had no say at all in the foundation of glofo...it was ALL to do with ATIC.

Right...who was going on about not being able to give credit where it was due? Oh wait it was TC not you 😀

Also....didn't you say AMD's only hope was to negotiate a way out of the x86 licence with intel? Sounds a bit hollow now doesn't it? How many more $'s will AMD's share price jump when the next fab goes UAE?

Hey buddy! I hope you're doing well!

Yes, AMD stock was up, but it was actually related to GlobalFoundries purchase of Chartered, not with the i5 release. AMD's stock has been rebounding of late, it still has a way to go though, as it is down down 87% from it's highs in 2006, and still down 27% from it's high point last year. AMD still needs to break a profit, but it would seem investors of lately are feeling more confident as the price goes up.

I think the Core i5 is going to do more damage to AMD, in terms of both marketshare and also it's going to force AMD to lower some of their prices in the range of 10-20%. This is only further going to hurt their revenues.

AMD simply needs a new arch that can better compete with Intel, so they can sell their top binning chips for $1000 instead of $200 dollars.

AMD still has a lot of great chocies in the mid-range (~$200) and budget markets. Their video cards kick butt too and their early adoption of DX11 will probably make my next video card an AMD.

Take care caamsa!

TC...i'm sure you were one of the people saying that selling off the fabs was a bad move.

AMD have in fact, gained more fabs than they ever had before.

How do you feel about this move now (fazers can 'chip in' too 😀).

I didn't have a developed opinion on it because I don't fully understand it and all the complexities. I do have concerns that they made this move to stay afloat financially, but if it works out for them in the long-run too that's great.

"chip in", lol. You're too punny!

OK, if not you, then my apologies. However it seems very coincidental that Mr. James33 registered yesterday on AMDZone and then promptly brought up the i5 turbocharging as some sort of Intel fraud, and then tried to get Smyrgyl banned for being an Intel troll who posts under 'fazersonstun" over here 😀.

Seems to me that Abu Dhabi & ATIC are the ones calling the shots, not AMD or GF.

Also, I now think ATIC is padding its investment by diversifying into non-x86 CPU fabs, just in case something bad happens to AMD 😀. Such as losing said x86 license or perhaps filing Chapt. 11 sometime before the Luther Forest fab comes online. Really, it makes sense - I wouldn't want all my expensive new marbles in AMDs pockets which appear to have sizeable holes in them 😀.
