However it seems very coincidental that Mr. James33 registered yesterday on AMDZone and then promptly brought up the i5 turbocharging as some sort of Intel fraud, and then tried to get Smyrgyl banned for being an Intel troll who posts under 'fazersonstun" over here 😀.

Truth be told fazers, I'm sure you have a lot of people as enemies lol. Whereas they might keep quiet here for fear of your intel correction crew (badtrip tc etal), they probably feel a lot safer on AMDZone. 😀

Sorry to disappoint you though, that sure would have made a great story worthy of THG.

Seems to me that Abu Dhabi & ATIC are the ones calling the shots, not AMD or GF.

Also, I now think ATIC is padding its investment by diversifying into non-x86 CPU fabs, just in case something bad happens to AMD 😀. Such as losing said x86 license or perhaps filing Chapt. 11 sometime before the Luther Forest fab comes online. Really, it makes sense - I wouldn't want all my expensive new marbles in AMDs pockets which appear to have sizeable holes in them 😀.

Sure, except for Crysis 😛.

Main reason I'm going with the 860 is the hyperthreading, and it's about the same Microcenter sales price as the 920 (except when the latter is $199 ). Win7 should make HT really shine from what I've read, and I usually rip/burn 2 movies at a time while logging on here to keep jennyh honest 😀.

Of course that last task would be a lightly threaded one 😛 so Win7 would just assign it to a fake core instead of a real one..

I didn't have a developed opinion on it because I don't fully understand it and all the complexities. I do have concerns that they made this move to stay afloat financially, but if it works out for them in the long-run too that's great.

You have to admit, the shareholders at AMD seem to be pleased with this turn of events. Maybe this was why AMD were upgraded to 'buy' at the beginning of last week.

Fazers's dream of GloFo abandoning AMD for greener pastures seems to be shattered. Maybe thats why the shares jumped so much, I dunno. Still, after selling the fabs AMD are at the highest point yet. Imo, selling the fabs was the masterstroke that saved AMD, and somewhere down the line will lead AMD back to the very top.

Actually I got that wrong, by Chartered joining I think the figure was 11% of all fabs in existence are now owned by ATIC/AMD.

Yeah, I still don't understand why shares jumped, but that's due to my lack of knowledge of how the relationships work. Good news for AMD is good news for consumers. I would much rather go back to the arrangement of where AMD and Intel kept one-upping each other with releases.

If AMD survives, anyone buying it below $10 is probably going to make A LOT of money. I know AMDFangirl (I think she bought around $2) is grinning ear to ear right now in Australia.

The reason the share priced jumped? Probably due to AMD still owning what, 40% of GloFo and their overnight emergence in new marketplaces. There are probably other ramifications too, perhaps AMD will be able to start creating new chips on different processes, using Chartered's fabs.

Last time I checked it was 35% of GF. Many are wondering what happens to AMDs "50%" voting share on the GF board now. IIRC AMD has to keep nominal equal voting rights plus a minimum 25% ownership of GF, according to the x86 license terms.

Or maybe the new Chartered division will make fried fish. That way, AMD customers can have their fish & chips 😀.

You may have noticed a certain 'support the underdog' mentality also. That is something you will find ingrained in the minds of most Scottish people. Something to do with a big bully competitor nearby I think....

If only Intel added ECC RAM support to Lynnfield I'd be able to create all kinds of specialised uber-efficient devices based on x86.
But now that purpose looks much more suited to Athlon/Phenom II X2-4 especially with the imminent price drop to react against Lynnfield.

Yes, AMD is going to declare bankruptcy tomorrow morning at 8AM Pacific Standard time. Intel will be only x86 CPU manufacturer and it will ignore AMD's request to be spared. All its employees will be tossed into a large pit so no company will ever dare rise up to the Evil Empire of Intel. Eventually it will take over the world and force us to solder circuit boards for crimes we commit. Those $1000 CPUs will be the least of your worries when we're all under "its" control. It'll be a sad day. Hopefully tomorrow never comes so we'll all be spared!
