Thought it was IBM, not AMD :). And they had one 6-transistor cell, not a whole working wafer. Talk about "useless"..

BTW, how's that 'Intel behind on 32nm' gaurantee again?? :)

Wait a few weeks :). As for AMD's 32nm, wait 18 months.

What I'm trying to do here is show that the gap has almost certainly closed. Perhaps not at 32nm, but at 22nm IBM and AMD were capable of doing something they weren't capable of doing before.

Funny, most analysts are saying the gap is widening. As one example: Hexus :

Intel widens 32nm chasm with AMD

With Intel closer than ever to introducing products based on 32nm technology, many see the technological gap widening with rival AMD, as the smaller chip firm falls farther and farther behind on process technology.

Last time around, AMD introduced its 45nm offerings in Q4 2008; roughly a year after Intel had already brought its 45nm products to market. Now in 2009, Intel is again marching forward with a plan to introduce products built on 32nm technology by the end of 2009, first with "Westmere" or "Dales" chips, and "Sandy Bridge" soon after that. Meanwhile, AMD isn't likely to introduce its 32nm wares until sometime during the first half of 2011.

Of course, AMD claims it will be ramping production on 32nm in 2010, but there is still no concrete timetable for 32nm product shipment, which means that Intel will soon effectively be adding another six months to its technological lead over AMD, leaving the smaller chip firm lagging some 18 months behind.

Wasn't one of your predictions that AMD would narrow the gap at 32nm to maybe 6 months??

1 year ago it was only a few SRAM cells. A few days ago, intel have a couple of billion of them on a wafer. It's a lot closer than 45nm was or 32nm is likely to be, that's all I'm saying.

Another 'gaurantee'??

See, if Hexus had told us about eyefinity even 1 day before release, I might even believe they are close to being in the 'loop'.

They don't have the first clue what IBM has. What are you saying, AMD is 18 months from releasing 32nm chips? I'll make sure I bookmark this one for a laugh in the not-too-distant future. 😀

The law of diminishing returns at play, I guess.

The first completely electronic computer (ENIAC I believe, built in 1946), was 1000x faster than its closest predecessor which used relays and other electromechanical devices.

It's all been downhill since :).

LOL - not hard to do when you start out at a buck & change 😀. IIRC AMD's most recent low point was $1.63 a share, a few months back.

The only reason anybody would buy AMD stock is the same as buying any penny stock - the speculative hope that it'll shoot up manyfold before dropping, and timing your buy & sell just right. It certainly is not for paying dividends 😀.

That's my thinking as well - AMD certainly seems competitive in the GPU market, and if forced into bankruptcy the ATI part would be the most valuable asset, by far. I think we'll see some sort of answer to this question in the next year or two.

No, unlike you I am smart enough not to make silly 'gaurantees' 😀

I wrote the post in fairly plain English; hopefully you won't find it necessary for me to wag my fingers and spell it out for you in sign language. What part of "Hexus" did you not understand? "Hex" or "us"?? 😗

Perhaps grunting, arm-flapping and snorting in monosyllables works best for communicating with you 😀.

AMD has said BD will be the first 32nm CPU for them. Due in 1H of 2011.

I'll wait while you take off your sox & shoes to do the math, but that seems to be anywhere from 15 to 21 months - 18 is right in the middle 😀.

LOL - well you hafta realize that it's after 10PM here on the right coast of the USA.

And since I have work (you may have heard of it - an activity involving a place you go to, perform some useful tasks for 8-10 hours a day, then go home and every so often get paid in actual type money, instead of chickens or cow pies), pardon me if I'm somewhat slow responding to your FUD & trash-talk! 😀

Besides, I hafta fend off my 2.5 yr old son who wants to bang on the keyboard & poke his fingers into the screen.. At least he didn't fill his diaper as a welcome-home-Daddy present for me!! :)

Yes I know what work is tyvm. :) Being able to sit at a pc and do as I please is one of the great benefits of being my own boss. It's a shame you can't be around during the day, I sure miss your awesome input. 😀

Basically Intel knows that by yanking AMD's license, AMD would also yank their x86-64, so its pretty much a lose lose for all. That's why Intel needs AMD to survive. Quite ironic.

EDIT:

Let me just finish this thread, so we won't have fanboys / fangirls spewing out FUDs, and others trying to correct them.

No, AMD is not doomed. It will continue to thrive, and live. However, unless Intel goes back to its lazy and idiotic self during the Netburst days, AMD will still, unfortunately, remain an alternative to Intel for most consumers. On the server side, unless AMD can continue to churn out excellent performance / price products, they will be pushed out completely by Intel.

So in short, AMD will not go away, but I doubt we'll see AMD becoming the top dog like in the 2005 again.

Now, thread locked in 5...4....3....2...1...

Lol. Good to have your ramndom humor back. Miss it sometimes.

The threads these days seem very serious.

And I agree. Why AMD is utilizing ATIs next gen weapon against Intel instead of their target, nVidia, is beyond me. ATIs focus os graphics performance at a affordable price, not trying to fight a CPU in a market that will clearly become a niche market like Intels Itanium has.

I would agree but as long as JDJ does not interject his personal opinions into thrads I could give a monkeys uncle that he is a mod. A mods job is like Turpit. He would talk in the threads and put his opinion in them but never would he close/edit a post based on that.

As long as JDJ keeps to that I think he will be fine.

And randomizer rules as a mod. How many necros get closed or ones that need to be locked get locked with him? A lot of them. Because he doesn't put up with any crap.

What about rabbit gouging, rabbit punching, rabbit hurling and clubing baby seals?

YOU CAN"T DO THAT TC!!!! Using actual business and economics in a computer tech forum is like saying Newton was wrong.

I'm just kidding. In all actuallity you have to remember that most of the people here are not economics majors. Sure a lot of them are great for PCs and tech support but when you bring money into the picture it turns them upside down face.

They will never accept the facts either. It was like the thread where jennyh was arguing that AMD losing money was not a bad thing. Thats like saying that your PC smoking is not a bad thing.

Actually Intel has had working 22nm SRAM cells for quite a while. And they have just not been showing it off. Sure IBM/AMD + 9 other companies can get it but they still can't get HK/MG working right. But Intel all by itself has......

But I guess AMDs engineeres are still "smarter".

Yep....

Actually it more than likely is. In fact they had a video showing a working 22nm cell. not sure if it was an actual CPU or SRAM or what but it was working. They also demoed working SATA 6Gb/s and USB 3.0.

But hey, why show off some great new up and coming technology? Thats wrong of Intel. or is it because AMD doesn't have the resources to do it. Well they would have if they didn't over pay for ATI.

Still your bitterness is revolting. Intels IDF is a great thing. Its like E3 or Comicon for computer nerds. Its shows more than just intels up coming, it shows a whole array of new technologies that will be coming to benefit every aspect of computing.

But as I said, thats wrong to do.

And seriously, both fazers and jenny need to stop. Fazers, arguing wont work. jennyh is set in its place. leave it. When AMDs 32nm comes out it comes out. And I would believe it will be later than Intels 32nm by quite a bit.

And jennyh, stop acting like a kid and throwing insults. Its a forum for people to discuss tech topics and to help people but when you don't like what you read you start acting like a little baby and insult them without even responding to the actual post.

BTW, on page 9 jenny you answered one post at a time in a row for 2 a few times. Sounds to me the pot is calling the kettle black....
