You will need to find a CPU cooler that will support the AMD socket and for that board it's socket AM3+. Some of them don't required the old back plate to be removed, it comes with the proper mounts for it to be installed onto the reference mounting socket. But if it needs to be remove, then all you need is to just take out the screws and the back plate should easily come off. Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo supports AMD CPUs.

Are you saying the hole thru the tray is in the wrong place, ie - for an older or intel system? I'm afraid you will need to remove the motherbd then.
or
The holes thru the motherbd to mount the backplate are not there?
You have to remove the existing cpu cooler mount, the backplate will secure to the motherbd using those holes. (just in case thats it)

This comes with a universal back plate, the reference mounting socket has to come off before that can be installed. If your case's motherboard tray does not have a cut out hole, where you can see the back plate, then you will have to take out the motherboard, before it can be installed.
