Check out <A HREF="http://www.hp.ca/products/static/pavilion-desktops/a610n/index.php" target="_new">this</A> link for an HP Pavilion.

Anyone else notice that the XP3200+ runs at 400MHz but they are only using DDR333?

I called sales, asked what was happening? Were they underclocking the CPU or overclocking the RAM. He told me "Its spec'd that way so it must work OK."

"No, it won't. The only way it would work would be to overclock the RAM to DDR400 speeds, or to underclock the processor to 333FSB"

"Oh, then they must be overclocking the RAM then."

Nice, I just had a guy at HP sales tell me they overclock their RAM to make it meet FSB specs.

My guess is, he doesn't know what hes saying, and they actually underclock the CPU.

Intel P4 2.4B, MSI 645E Max-U Mobo, 1GB DDR333, ATI R9800PRO 128MB, TT PurePower 420W, SB Live 5.1, Samsung 120GB, Maxtor 120GB, LG DVD+-R/RW, WIN2K PRO SP4

Just got off the phone with HP Tech support, and he said, and I quote, "We wouldn't overclock the motherboard, because that is just bad."

So I asked him why they were selling a computer with an underclocked CPU in it, just to meet FSB specs, and he said "Maybe its economics, I'm not sure."

"Well, no its not economics, as 512MB PC3200 is cheaper than 512MB PC2700."

and this is a shining example of why I would NEVER buy a PC from a store or online retailer. Most people wouldn't even realize that their system is crippled by their memory.

They could be running asynch, don't forget, in which case both RAM and FSB would be within their relative specs. Would still be a horrible thing to do though.

I also seem to recall reading somewhere that there WAS a 3200+ XP chip which ran the 166/333 FSB, that ran at a little over 2.2Ghz (2.25 or something?) which was released only to a few large OEMS, and was never available to the public at large. Can't remember where I read that, so it could just have been a dream though 😱 ..

ummm.. Actually D00d, I just checked the link and it's an XP3000+, not a 3200+, so the FSB/RAM WILL be in synch @ 166/333 Mhz/DDR, as that's the bus the 3000+ uses...

Sorry, my bad as far as the 3000/3200 mistake, but they DO have the FSB listed as 400MHz, if you look at the spec. PDF file.

And yes, I do realize that they can run async, I do on my mobo (FSB @ 133MHz, RAM @ 166) but why would you WANT to run RAM slower?

So, where is the typo? Is the FSB wrong or is the processor spec wrong? And IIRC, is there not an XP3000+ that runs 200MHZ FSB? Maybe that was a dream too!

but why would you WANT to run RAM slower?
Because they can probably get lots of old PC2700 very cheap now, HP dont care about giving the customer a good system they just want to make as much money as possible.

Anyway why are you so bothered? Running the RAM out of sync will prob cause about a 7% slowdown on that system.

HP has a SPECIAL version of the XP3200+ that runs at 333 FSB. It also runs at 2333MHz instead of 2200MHz to make up for its bus speed deficiency. Are you sure your HP isn't one of those?

Thank-you. Finally, someone who knows what they are talking about.. And bet you don't even work at HP, do you?

I personally don't care what they sell, I would never buy one of their PCs, I was just bored at work, noticed a discrepency, and wanted to rattle some chains.

I don't work at all, got a job for me? My only work is a volunteer job as a technical writer.
