Hello,

I am experiencing a persistent issue with my HP EliteBook 1040 x360 G10 which is approximately 7 months old. The fan frequently runs at high speeds and produces noticeable noise, even when the system is idle or under minimal load. Additionally, the device tends to heat up considerably, affecting its overall performance and user experience.

I previously sent my laptop to the vendor from whom I purchased it. They examined the device and stated that there was no issue found. However, as a precaution, they replaced the motherboard. Despite this replacement, the problem still persists. The fan frequently accelerates and maintains high RPMs intermittently, even when no resource-intensive applications are running.

The CPU temperature rises rapidly, especially when plugged in, reaching maximum levels within a short period. Even when no applications are running, CPU usage spikes to 95-100%, causing excessive heat and performance degradation. The temperature also fluctuates significantly, with momentary spikes reaching extremely high levels, even under minimal system load.

My laptop's specifications:

CPU: 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1355U 1.70 GHz
RAM: 32.0GB

To troubleshoot, I have formatted the system three times, yet the issue persists even on a completely clean installation without any third-party applications installed. This ongoing problem is also causing noticeable performance issues, making it difficult to work efficiently.

I have already tried the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Updated BIOS and all system drivers via HP Support Assistant.
  • Checked Task Manager for any abnormal CPU or memory usage (nothing unusual was found).
  • Adjusted power settings to balanced mode to reduce power consumption.
  • Cleaned the air vents and ensured proper ventilation.
  • Performed hardware diagnostics via HP UEFI (no hardware issues detected).

Despite these measures, the issue remains unresolved. I would appreciate any insights, troubleshooting recommendations, or potential firmware updates that might help resolve this persistent fan noise and overheating problem.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Best regards,

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Perhaps see if this thread helps;

As for this;
Cleaned the air vents and ensured proper ventilation.
You might want to use a higher quality thermal paste in place of the one that came from the factory and see if that helps. To also add, you might want to prop the rear of the laptop up to allow for cooler, ambient air entering the vents of the laptop to cool it better.

You can check and see if the laptop is pending any BIOS updates.

Sadly there isn't much you can do since all laptop processors since the past 5 years are designed to run hot...so a 1000 Deg C bottom is considered normal by the processor manufacturer's.

There could be a multitude, or a single problem, so guessing would have you chasing your tail. Her are some general troubleshooting steps you already have and could attempt.
  1. Uninstall 3rd-party browsers
  2. Run Chkdsk
  3. Disable Cloud-based protection in Windows Defender
  4. Disable Windows Search Indexer
  5. Disable Print Spooler Service
  6. Adjust the Visual Effects
  7. Update Device Drivers
  8. Run SFC & DISM
  9. Run the Performance Troubleshooter
  10. Upgrade your firmware or upgrade your RAM
  11. Use Refresh Windows Tool
  12. Examine System Health Report
  13. Troubleshoot using Process Tamer
  14. Is Message Signaled Interrupt enabled?
  15. Turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device
  16. Run Power Troubleshooter.

Thank you for your response.

I have already performed most of the steps you mentioned, but the issue remains the same. Could this be a general problem with the i7-1355U processor? I have formatted my system three times, the service center replaced the motherboard, and there are no third-party applications installed, yet the fan frequently speeds up throughout the day, even when the computer is not under load. As a result, I cannot fully experience the device’s performance. Additionally, the temperature frequently reaches 100°C.

What makes this situation even more unusual is that a colleague in my office is using the exact same laptop model, and he is experiencing the exact same issue. On the other hand, our EliteBook 840 G9 laptops do not have this problem at all.

I am unsure whether this behavior is normal, and I would appreciate further insights regarding this issue.
