My 8440p auto shuts down and a repairman narrowed it down to the i7 CPU. It's stable on BIOS but anything after that and you roll the dice on an auto shutdown. It may even randomly shutdown as soon as you turnit on. Before this happened, it worked perfectly for a day. I noted the temps and it was around the mid 60s and 70s for the CPU and GPU respectively. Temperatures were not alarmingly high.

HP's website lists the i7 720qm, i7 620m, i5 540m, and i5 520m as the usable CPUs for the 8440p. I have an i5 560m from another laptop which is for the same sockets as the 4 mentioned.

Will a transplant work?

I should have thought about and asked this earlier, I've already purchased an i5 520 online but I want to try the 560m to see if the i7 is really faulty or if there is another cause for concern on the motherboard.

Please close this thread.

I won't be transplanting that CPU for testing as it might break it and/or the receiving laptop. I've found an affordable i5 540m and it is now on its way to me. I figured that if the CPU is faulty, a test to replace it would be less costly than sending this to (another and different) repairman. The later will be my last resort, or selling the 8440 for cheaper than dirt, in case the shutdowns persist with the i5.
