Question Hp Envy Dv7 processor heat issue

So a long while back, I received a Hp Envy Dv7 laptop as a gift. It worked alright for about a year or two, but the HD ended up fizzling on me later. Replacing the Hd itself wasn't such an issue. What was an issue however, is the tendency for this laptop to suddenly shut down over heat issues. It'll work alright for about 20-30 minutes before having to shut itself off.

My question is, where exactly should I start? Should I just replace the laptop fan, or apply a new set of thermal grease?

You might simply be working it too hard --- do you run games on it (gaming generates more heat than general usage)?
