HP Laptop

Have an Omnibook 2100,
(233 MHz Pentium with MMX,96 MB EDO RAM,3.2 GB HDD)
was running Win 98, but badly.
I put in some more RAM and installed XP Pro.
Bluettothed it to main PC and ran Win update. Got all
updates except SP1 and it worked for a day or so, then
wouldn't boot up past the splash screen.
Formatted and re- installed XP Pro, started the update
again, got half way through SP1, it hung and now it won't
boot up past the splash screen.
Doesn't matter whether it is on battery power or mains, or
mains w/o battery connected.
Bios set to default values.
Anyone any ideas?

A 233 laptop with how much more RAM added? If you didn't
get to 256 or even 512 you may just not have enough RAM.
How big is the hard drive, you need 1.5 GB after XP has
installed for a full install, you need a minimum of 1.5 GB
free to begin an install?

I assume you did not bother to update the old BIOS, you did
not run the XP hardware and software compatibility upgrade
check, and you did not bother to look at the HP web site for
advice on the upgrade or to see if there are XP drivers for
you old machine.

Suggest you use the HP W98 system restore disks to see if
you can make it work again as W98. If you want XP buy a
laptop that has XP factory installed.

Howevewr, I have got further now.
I have re-re-installed XP.
Managed the bluetooth connection to main PC.
Even fetched and installed the updates (not SP1, though).
Had the damn thing running sweetly, set up the wifes games
(online browser based, JVM)
turned it off, picked it up, walked accross the room with
it, in order to allow the wife to connect up and sit in
the comfort of the sofa. Blue screen of death on start
up, after XP splash. No idea what the screen says, it
immediately disappears, then the machine restarts, blue
screen of death on start up, after XP splash, then the
machine restarts, ad infinitum.

I am thinking of using a new window, the out into the damn
street!!

Help me, please, for the sake of my sanity and the
family's lives!

Since the machine meets, or exceeds, the minimum
requirements for XP, I can't se that being a problem. As
for the hardware compatibility test, as it says there,
just because it isn't listed doesn't mean it won't work.

Has anybody got any real ideas?

You listed your hard drive as 3.2 GB, XP will use over half
and that doesn't leave much room for little details like
applications and user data files. If you want to defrag the
drive you need 15% free space for the program to run. You
can gain some space by turning system restore off. But I
will stand behind my comment, XP will never run well on this
system, it lacks CPU, RAM and hard drive space.

When you say it meets the minimum requirements WHY IS IT
CRASHING?

I have the same model laptop, with 128 MBytes of RAM and with
a 6 GByte disk. It happily multi-boots between Win98, WinNT,
Win2000, and WinXP Professional.

If your machine gets stuck in the WinXP splash screen then
one of your memory chips might be flawed. You could try the
memory tester from here: www.memtest.com.
