So my HP Z600 is making a base level noise that is above what I want to accept. Making music with my computer, it´s better to keep things low-noise.

My question is if anyone has tried upgrading to a large fan instead, like the "Noctua NH-U14S" with a 140mm fan, or something that uses 120mm, for low-rpm fan operation. It seems that the computer is built to only handle certain types of mounts, so that´s basically the issue I am wondering about.

Has anyone tried?

I once installed an alternative cooler in my Dell Precision T3500. I replaced the original fan-free-super-hot-solution with my own build of a Corsair H60 with a special mount in the back. Perhaps someone tried something similar with their HP. Check out the link below and go to the DBox images for a detailed look of my Dell creation:

By the way, I found more options that seem to be the right choice for the Z-series, the Z600 and Z800 HP workstations. Models of non-water coolers from Noctua, like :

NH-D9DX i4 3U

NH-D9DX i4 (push-pull fans)

or the one I´m hoping to run, the NH-U12DX i4:

Please let me know if anyone has any ideas on weather this would work or not. I know there are issues with the 5-pin fan system of the HP Z-series MB:s... But that seems to be solvable through some "elec-tricks"...

Hi Aeklov,

Did you try some other coolers or fans in your Z600. I also have a Z600 and would like to make it more quiet. The fan RPM goes constantly up and down when I am using the computer for rendering. Before changing heat sinks, I thought I would try just replacing the fans with quiet 80mm 4-pin pwm fans. I would be interested in hearing if you replaced your heat sinks and fans with another model since installation space is limited in the Z600's.

Hello again, like almost a year later. I did not actually go through with my purchase. I sold the computer instead, but I´m now in possession of another copy of the model that I am trying to upgrade with another processor, I currently have only one in mine. So I thought I would try the Noctua NH-D9DX i4 3U which is supposed to fit perfectly, but the question still remains if one can actually get the fan to work with the 5-pin connector. I know I´ve seen some thread around here somewhere that discusses this very issue. The result of that forum-thread was that the fans had different connections (because why choose the most appropriate one?, as HP would say ;P), and that the connection would fail or crash some part of the motherboard when the ground was inserted into the + an so on. I dont know that stuff.

So my question now is, did you actually try the separate fan in your Z600? Like another 92mm fan? There is one for 3 bucks in a store nearby, perhaps its time to try that before, hehe...

The fix for the fifth pin on the HP z600 and z800 motherboards is to solder a short jumper pin from pin 1 to pin 5.

As far as Noctua NH-D9DX i4 3U they will fit. at least on the z800. Not sure about the z600. I have two coming for my new z800 build but here is a picture of the NH-U9DX i 4 in a z800 workstation.

. Again not sure if the shroud fits correctly using that cooler but I can report back in a few days with pictures and whether the shroud covers all fit without modification using the NH-D9DX i4 3U CPU coolers.

So did the shroud fit? And should I assume the U12DX i4 won't fit?
