I have XP Home. Under "owner", the ntuser.dat is 11.5 MG. Can I cut
the size of that down? Maybe login under another name and delete it?
Or what?

What, in your opinion, should be the correct size for ntuser.dat?

System Security Suite (3S) is a program designed to remove internet tracks
and junk files from your computer. It allows you to delete Cookies,
clear Internet Explorer Cache, delete index.dat Files, clear Typed URLs,
Windows Temp Folder and much more.

ntuser.dat is the registry hive HKEY_CURRENT_USER for the user currently
logged onto the PC.

[[The optimization done by NTREGOPT is simply compacting the registry hives
to the minimum size possible.]]

Get both of these...

NTREGOPT NT Registry Optimizer
ERUNT The Emergency Recovery Utility NT
http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/

ERUNT [[Note: The "Export registry" function in Regedit is USELESS (!) to
make
a complete backup of the registry. Neither does it export the whole
registry (for example, no information from the "SECURITY" hive is
saved), nor can the exported file be used later to replace the current
registry with the old one. Instead, if you re-import the file, it is
merged with the current registry, leaving you with an absolute mess of
old and new registry keys.]]
http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/erunt.txt

NTREGOPT [[Similar to Windows 9x/Me, the registry files in an NT-based
system
can become fragmented over time, occupying more space on your hard
disk than necessary and decreasing overall performance. You should
use the NTREGOPT utility regularly, but especially after installing
or uninstalling a program, to minimize the size of the registry files
and optimize registry access.

The program works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch",
thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously
modified or deleted keys.

Note that the program does NOT change the contents of the registry in
any way, nor does it physically defrag the registry files on the drive
(as the PageDefrag program from SysInternals does). The optimization
done by NTREGOPT is simply compacting the registry hives to the
minimum size possible.]]

11 Meg is about right for that file. It would be slightly smaller if you
un-installed all user programs, and then cleaned and compacted the registry.
However, why would you want a PC with zero programs on it?

Face it, each new release of a Microsoft operating system is far less
efficient than its predessor. I remember a win95 PC with 1 Gig of total
disk, operating system, programs, plus user data. Today, my Windows
directory alone is 2.5 Gig. Of course, XP does a lot more than 95. And, I
have dual internal 120 Gig disks, so I really do not mind.

If space is a problem, buy a new and/or larger hard drive. Some third-party
optimizers/compressors are relatively safe, such as the one mentioned
earlier in this thread. But, be sure that you can backup and restore the
registry before playing with it, juts in case. As a minimum, run the XP
wizard to create a restore point, whihc includes the registry.
