[SOLVED] I cannot get my RAM frequency to reach 3200mhz as advertised ?

Hi guys,

basically recently I realised that my ram is not running at the clock speed they can (3200mhz) my gigabyte motherboard is quite old as my pc is around 4 years old, it’s a gigabyte B250M-DS3H and is at its most updated bios from 2018 F9 so I can’t update it to possible solve this. I have 2 G.skill 8bg 3200mhz but they are capped in the bios at 2400mhz when I set the Xmp profile when I manually try to adjust the speed it goes automatically to 800mhz unless I put in 2400mhz why is this ?? I have been trying for days now to try and adjust this as I’m sure this will improve my performance in gaming as only the small increase from 2100mhz to 2400 alone helped but I want to run at 3200mhz. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Their web site says you must use a 7th generation processor to attain 2400MHz operation or XMP. I don't see any mention of higher speeds being supported. Scroll down to the Memory section

Hi thanks for getting back to me,

I have an i7-7700k which is overclocked, and im running at a speed of 2400mhz at the moment but my ram is 3200mhz. does this mean that my motherboard doesnt support 3200mhz clock speeds and i would have to get a newer motherboard ?

and if so I have been looking to see what intel motherboards support 3200mhz speeds but its very confusing as AMD boards come up as well i don't want to upgrade something not compatible, i have a geforce rtx 2060 and a i7-7700k atm would greatly appreciate a suggested motherboard upgrade.

You won't need a new Windows key my friend. If you have one you can use the same one. If you don't know what it is you can use software like Produkey to get your code. Clean format and use old code.

Mmm regarding your motherboard, it's kinda up to you. You can either upgrade to a newer board that supports your CPU (LGA 1511) and 3200mhz RAM frequency.. OR you can get a newer board and a new CPU (LGA 1200) which is the better option but is going to cost you.

Personally I feel that with Intel, you don't score THAT much of a FPS gain with higher RAM frequency. On Ryzen systems it makes quite a difference, but with Intel, not that much. If I were you, I would rather save up for a new Mobo and CPU, because if you just replace the board, you are going to have to buy new parts sooner than later anyway.

Pain because I was having FPS issues and stuttering on the newest cod games and bought a new gpu and ram in the thought that was the problem, what cpu would you recommend from the Ryzen side of things ?

Well I can trade in my cpu for about £200 and will have around £800 to spend upgrading soon but would rather it not be that much. Also at the moment I have a Corsair water cooler would I be able to use that with the new processor. I believe I might need a different bracket thou

Something like that would be a good enough upgrade if you don't want too spend too much. Check if your Cooler supports AM4 sockets. Also just make sure your PSU is strong enough.
