Okay... so i grab a new Liteon 24x burner...hook the bad boy up and burn something...lags this p2 300mhz 96mb ram down bodly mon. so i remember that its supports DMA so i goto device manager, check DMA and restart... Now windows won't load with the new liteon drive connected to the ide. I can have the power and stuff in it...but windows won't load completely til the liteon that i enable dma on isn't conected. I tried every combo and solo rig possible. So I say, hmm...maybe I could somehow remove that DMA config in BIOS ( cause the liteon isn't in the device manager b/c the pc won't start with it plugged in). But Oh, I have a Gateway and there are No DMA or UDMA options in the friggin BIOS because they give you a nice custom, hurt-proof BIOS so a baby can't press buttons and destroy your pc, b/c gateway sells to babies. so anyway... i want this badboy liteon to work again and i think i need to disable this UDMA or whatever on my secondary ide controller, but how? somebody PLEEEASE Help me. Thanks!

PS, when it was frozen once while loading windows i unplugged the ide from the liteon and windows started loading, but w/o my fast burner...bitch!

I don't understand? My jumper is set for slave? explain please...

Try booting in Safe mode with the drive attached. If you can get it to boot, then you can go to the hardware properties for the drive and turn off DMA.

If that doesn't work...
This is a long shot, so I have NO idea if it will work. It's something I would try in your situation...

1) Boot without the drive
2) Search all the INF files on your system for something that refers to your Liteon. Maybe the phrase "Liteon" or the model number of your drive...
3) If you find an INF that refers specifically to your Liteon drive, try renaming it to XXXXXX.inf.bak.
4) Power down and connect the drive
5) Boot back up. Hopefully, because you renamed the INF file, maybe the drive will get re-recognized and re-installed.
6) If it doesn't work, it might be a good idea to go back and rename that INF file to its original name

Hope this helps

I had the same problem of not being able to disable the DMA option. In Safe Mode, run REGEDIT (Registry Editor). Do a search for "IDEDMADRIVE". When REGEDIT shows you "IDEDMADRIVEx" entries (where x is a number), change the value of each entry to "00". This will disable DMA on all drives. Then, reload Windows in regular mode, and turn DMA back on for the drives that are compatible with it.

Good luck.
