I can't read some of the DVDs in the TechNet subscription

Some of the DVDs in TechNet subscription I can't read while some others I can
read OK. Could it be related to how the DVDs are printed? (Some colors
doesn't seem to be liked...)
With the DVDs I can't read the PC tries for a minute or two and at the end
it proposes me to write to the blank CD, (as it seems to look to the
computer), with Windows Media player or another program.

Here's a list of some of the DVDs I can and can not read:
TechNet Subscription Technical Information Library setup and index July 2005
I can NOT read.
The next disk downloads TND0409_EN September 2004 I can read.
Downloads EN Disc 0236.06 July 2005 I can read.
Downloads European, Middle Eastern Disc 0241.06 July 2005 I can read.
Technical Training 2003-2005 EN Disc 0237.02 July 2005 I can NOT read.
Security updates EN Disc 0238.05 July 2005 I can NOT read.
Security updates DE, FR, IT Disc 0240.05 July 2005 I can read.
Evaluations EN disc 0197.03 July 2005 I can read.
Evaluations EN disc 0198.01 March 2005 I can read.
Beta Evaluations DE, EN, JA disc 0208.03 June 2005 I can read.

Another example is the Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2. The discs team suite and
team foundation server I can read, but I can NOT read the disc SQL Server
2005 developer edition.

The computer this is happening on is a Compaq SR1458FR with XP SP2 and the
dvd burner is the TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B the was installed in the PC as
standard. I've tried to read the DVDs on another PC with the same results.
That one is a Compaq SR1408FR. I.e. another model, but unfortunately the same
dvd burner. I've checked the Compaq web site for any updates, but the driver
used seems to be the standard windows driver from Microsoft and there are not
any firmware updates on the Compaq web site. And the TechNet DVD Technical
Information Library I can't read otherwise maybe there would have been help
there... ;-)

Do you have any ideas?

All the DVRs I've used do not have colorizing like some CDRs do. This is
due to chemicals used in making the CDRs. Rather, they're all
silver-colored and highly reflective.

Most mass-produced CDs and DVDs are pressed, not burned.

I did contact TechNet. First I called them and I explained my problem to
them. They asked me to send them the details by e-mail. So I did and here's
the reply I got:
"Hi Kurt,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Microsoft TechNet Program.
With regards to your recent email, I would like to confirm that if you log
on to the manager news groups they will be able to provide the support you
are looking for or you can call you Technical Support"

Supposing that they mean the manageD news groups, here I am looking for the
confirmed support.

Hi

Have you tried those disks in another PC to see if you have the same
problem? If the disks are damaged, the problem really ought to go through
TechNet for possible replacements. Have you tried the TechNet Managed News
Groups?

Hi,

I really don't think the problem is with the DVDs themselves or if the
problem is the the DVDs that the replacement DVDs would also have the same
problem. I received a shipment notive for the August discs are on their way.
It would be a very pleasant surprise to see that I would be able to read the
technical information library disc, but I wouldn't bet much money on it if
the dvd looks the same...

Is the problem that Microsoft produces some DVDs that can't read by all DVD
players or that my dvd player can't read all DVDs made ny Microsoft or the
Microsoft driver used by this device?
I don't know, I just know that I can't read the discs...

As I wrote I did contact TechNet directly and they advised me to use the
TechNet managed news groups. When I log on to the technet managed news groups
I do not have a news group the is dedicated to TechNet, so I chose the one I
figured to come closest. I can't read the technet DVDs on a computer running
Windows XP.

Funny thing though, it seems that the TechNet managed news groups are just a
subset of the public news groups. Maybe they just have more monitoring on
these groups?

If you know another of the TechNet managed news groups that would be better
suited please don't hesitate to advise me.

Hi,

I presume that all the Microsoft DVDs are pressed. The silver colored and
highly reflective mirror-like ones I can read. Then Microsft also does DVDs
that are mostly white, black, green, etc. Some of these I can't read.

Is the problem that Microsoft produces some DVDs that can't read by all DVD
players or that my dvd player can't read all DVDs made ny Microsoft or the
Microsoft driver used by this device?
I don't know, I just know that I can't read some discs...

Any ideas?

Am sure you have contact with others locally with DVD players. Try those
unreadable DVDs on their PCs.

May be a reflectivity problem with the DVD material MS technet chose to use.
Works on some DVD players, but not on others.

All the DVDs should be readable. Did you have the CD version beforehand?
If so, did you have any problems with those?

I finally got hold of a newer firmware for the DVD writer and now it reads
all the TechNet DVDs! 🙂 I'm a happy camper again! 🙂
