its around 5-10 years old i do not know exactly
so is there a way to get my windows on to a new drive without buying a new key?
Yeah, that is getting up there in age for an HDD.
As far as Windows is concerned, it depends on how you acquired your copy of Windows originally. If the system was OEM (HP, Dell, Etc.) built or "store bought", it should have come with a key, but if you don't have it, you should be able to contact the system builder for assistance. If you purchased your copy of Windows, it will come with the key and that should be listed somewhere on the original packaging. I have seen cases where the key is on the Windows sticker on the back of the computer itself when built by an OEM for that key is locked to your motherboard and will not work on another computer (Retail keys can generally be installed on multiple systems). If you bought the computer second hand, like on craigslist or ebay, you may be out of luck, but if you bought it from someone you know, give them a jingle to see if they still have it.
