Hi
I decide to buy a nvme ssd for gaming, In my country both 980 1TB and 970 evo plus 1TB are same price so which one should I choose?
  • 980 is newer that 970 evo plus but on internet every body says 970 evo plus is better?!
  • On Samsung website writes 980 uses host memory (RAM) as cache; is this means 980 reduces my RAM? and 970 has own cache
  • On Samsung website writes 980 uses nickel coating to help manage the controller's heat level; is this means 980 is cooler than 970 or 970 also has this coating?
  • On Samsung website writes for lifespan: 5 years or TBW, whichever comes first; is this means ssd will dies after 5 years even TBW (600 for 1TB) not consumed? Which has more endurance?
Another side question:
At the same price by nvme i can buy a HDD WD Black 2TB should i choose hdd just for 1TB extra?!

My system spec summary: Maximus X Hero wifi+8700K+16 GB 3200 RAM+HX850i+RTX2080OC+960 EVO 250GB+HDD 1TB WD BLACK
Thanks

It IS better,

In reality, there isn't much of a diff. I have 970 Evo Plus 2TB as OS drive in my Skylake build and 980 1TB as OS drive in my Haswell build (missus'es PC). Thus far, i haven't seen diff between the two.

Neither of the two drives come with a heatsink and can live without active cooling just fine. My 970 Evo Plus hovers around 45C.

No, your SSD won't outright die as soon as 5 years is up. What happens, is that warranty expires.

Warranty is either 5 years OR TBW. If you fill the TBW sooner, e.g ~3 years, your warranty expires as soon as TBW is filled. Or if you don't write as much stuff on your SSD, after 5 years, warranty expires regardless. But the drive will continue working.

Endurance (lifespan) is equal between the two.

Unless you critically need extra space, don't get HDD. HDDs are extremely slow compared to M.2 NVMe SSDs.

960 EVO 250GB

Cute. My old OS drive was also 960 Evo but mine is 500 GB in size. :D
