I created a Time Machine volume for Macs with a TP-Link router to simplify my backup tasks, and it was surprisingly easy — one central backup point...

I wish for router reviews in general, that more focus would be put on USB storage. While they lack things like redundancy, they are an incredibly efficient way to add some extra network storage, especially if you don't need redundancy for its storage.

For example, if you store a bunch of bulk media to the USB storage and stream it to devices like a smart TV. You effectively get good streaming with only about 1 watt or so of extra power usage if using NAND storage and a relatively slow transfer.

Beyond that unlike in the past when many routers had really slow storage performance, modern SOCs on higher end consumer routers can easily saturate a 2.5GbE connection for reads and writes.

I did something like that for my Ubuntu machine, it's very easy too - define the directories you want to backup, point to a network share, define the periodicity for the backup, define your encryption key/password, and go.
I think the most difficult to setup here would be Windows, actually - it lacks a simple, built-in, efficient network backup solution.
