Hello,
I recently bought the 2 GTX 560 SC on craigslist because my 5970 needed repairs, now which one do you think would be better for lets say Battlefield 3?

Edit: sorry I was editing

Edit: I have a 30" Monitor and like to play my games on 2500 X 1600 Resolution

Do you have the GTX 560s or the 560Ti's version ? Anyway the scaling of the 2 GTX 560 in SLI might be close or better than the scaling of HD 5970.

As long as no lots of reviews on the GTX 560 in SLI, i would say you try the HD 5970 and the GTX 560 SLI and see which perform better in high end games.

Regarding the 30" & 2500 x resolution, 1.5 GB or 2 GB of VRAM is recommended in such high resolution, since the higher the resolution in games, the more VRAM there should be since more textures & packs need to be loaded. Due to technologies such as AA, MSAA, AF, QSCAA.. those really feed on the VRAM depending on the game.

Microstuttering is not a new phenomenon. It will be present in any dual GPU setup, including an HD5970.

@OP: At reference speeds the HD5970 is going to give slightly better performance overall but the two GTX 560s will likely pull ahead in games that take good advantage of DX11 due to Nvidia's superior performance in tessellation. If you overclock then that should put the GTX 560s ahead as well.

The Tom's article claims that while microstuttering does necessarily occur in all dual-GPU setups (there will always be imbalances in rendering times), it only really becomes a visible problem - the only important kind - low-to-mid-end cards.

I really think the 5970 would be a better setup for the larger screen.
Do you have the time to test it out ?
A 560 is a faster clocked 460
I remember reading a lot of reviews saying the 460's were better than a 480
but I must say I've never read anywhere they were better than a 5970.
5970 still has a lot of jam.

Let us know if you decide to test it out.

$5 on the 5970

The GTX 560 may be weaker than the HD5870 but the GPUs in the HD5970 are underclocked from HD5870 speeds and Crossfire scaling on the HD5000 series was rather unimpressive compared to SLI scaling on current Nvidia cards(and HD6000 as well actually.)
Here is a review of (non-Ti) GTX 560s in SLI;
http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-560-sli-review/1
They beat the HD5970 in 8 of the 9 tests where they are compared and the one where the HD5970 manages a slight victory is a synthetic rather than an actual game. The numbers are for 1920x1200 but I doubt 2560x1600 would change things much.

The SLI'd GTX 560s will spank the HD 5970. If you have no issue with a multi-card configuration there's no question the pair are better (by about 20% to 40% depending on the game).

I'm confused - is this so the O.P. can have a weaker configuration?

The HD5970 has 1gb of memory per GPU, just like the GTX 560s.

WEI is useless. Ignore it entirely. Actual performance in games is what you should be looking at.

An SLI GTX 560 setup has 2gb of ram. 1gb per GPU. Just like the HD5970, as I said. There's nothing in the thread you linked that says otherwise. All it says is the ram isn't shared which is true. It's also true of the dual GPU cards.
