This is a Reddit post my friend made for me. He's helping me with my new build.

So a friend is doing a new build with a Ryzen 7 7700x,
Asus ROG Strix B650-A Mobo and Lian Li AlO cooler. He
finally got it to post but the temps keep sitting at 84c. I
know thats pretty high.Ihave a 7800X3d and the same
cooler and im chilling at 36c. He has re-applied the
thermal paste. The Al0 is on correctly.

What are we missing here? Any thoughts on what to try?
This is his first build and im helping him remotely from
like 1000 miles away so its hard to help troubleshoot.
ANy help would be greatly appreacited.

Extra info:
Ive taken off the cooler and redone the thermal paste a 2nd time. No change. Ive tried unplugging the other fans and trying to dedicate the cpu cooler to get it to run. The light on the aio itself does not turn on but the lights on the radiator fans turn on.. mostly. The fans don't kick on though.
I would just accept that it was a bad unit but somehow yesterday the thing kicked on just fine. I'm doing all of this without the gpu installed, btw because thats another issue. The pc wont turn on at all with the gpu inserted.. but one thing at a time.

Parts are all new out of the box and include:
RoG strix b650-A gaming wifi mobo
Ryzen 7 7700x
Corsair rm850
Lian li ga II trinity sl-inf 360
2 sets of lian li uni fan sl120 v2 rgb fans
2 x G.skill ripjaws s5 ddr5 16g ram
Samsung 990 evo 2tb m.2 ssd
Rtx 4070ti super from galax
Lian li 011 dynamic evo rgb case

Any other info needed, let me know.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Lian-Li have a number of cooler's in their portfolio, new and old, which one did your friend purchase?

When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model if the unit's recycled from an older build. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

Sorry, about that. Its been updated with the info requested. Also, I'm the friend. Its my build so you're speaking direct to the source. Also I'm not sure the bios version because I dont want to turn it on with it gwtting so hot immediately.

Does the thermal paste look at though it correctly spread. If you are using the wrong mounting screws or something maybe it is leaving a gap.

This almost seems the AIO is defective. These are very hard to test. You many times can feel the vibrations from the pump but the motor running does not mean the pump really is working but if the motor does not seem on be sure that it it plugged into the correct motherboard headers . If it is one of those fancy AIO it may have its own controller which makes things even more complex.

Generally if you were to feel the tubing near the radiator one of the tubes should feel a bit warmer than the other.

You really shouldn't buy AIO unless you really have a need...something like a overclocked 14900k. Most modern air coolers easily keep most CPU well under control.
Not much can go wrong with a air cooler.

Hey, sorry for the late reply. It was a faulty pump. Got a new one and its cooling properly. However I have a different problem now. The pc will turn all fans, pumps and lights on without the gpu plugged in to the power supply and it runs normally. Whenever i hook up the gpu to the power supply, nothing turns on. The psu just makes a clicking noise and stops.

Either your power supply is not able to supply enought power for the GPU or the GPU is defective and drawing too much current. Temporarily replace them, one at a time, will point to the defective one.
