Thank you so much Dark ants 1 USAFret and mcnumpty23.
Its not me who's hogging all the bandwidth ,thing is that we only have 8 Mbps of speed ad if anyone uses Skype or anything of that sort it gets extremely slow. I am sure he has downloaded a program or something to kick me off cause even my phone wont connect when he does this. I just dont know how.
When i connect my laptop through LAN it works fine .
Unfortunately there is no higher authority i can speak to. I am stuck in this apartment which I have already paid for for a year.
I also cannot confront him if i am not sure how exactly hes doing this.
See I'm connected fine right now but I'm sure it happen again so Please help me so I can prevent him from doing it again
the software you suggested http://www.eset.com/us/home/products/smart-security/
is this ? Thing is that its too expensive for me to buy .do you know if i can torrent this or is there another free software that does the same thing ?
also do i need to remove the current antivirus in my lappy if I do install this?
thanks
Also is there a fix for this for my iphone? i know I cant change the phone's mac address.

free 30 day trial of that software here to see if it helps and yes you would need to uninstall current antivirus shouldnt use 2 at the same time

So log on to the router and see what the settings say. You will need to do this via an ethernet cable.

D/L the trial first and see if it works. As mentioned (especially now you told us you guys manage your own router) there are lots of things you can do at router level.
What you really need to do is get the three of you together and have a rational conversation about it. You don't need to accuse anyone directly. Set up times for D/L e.g. at night when everyone is sleeping, Implement QoS and manage the situation together...

I have tried to have a conversation with him to do exactly that but it then somehow it starts working again mysteriously. Point it he keeps kicking us off when he feels like and then locks his room door, so we cant even accesses the router via a LAN cable.
So I'm going to have to download the anti virus software and try and prevent him from doing it.
Do you know how I can prevent him from removing my phone off the wifi?
Also I already have QuickHeal anti virus on my lappy installed for a year , Is it possible to do the same thing via quick-heal or Is ESET the only antivirus software that does this ?
Thanks a ton again.

USAFRet is right.
But I dont get how you have nobody to talk to. There must be someone who is responsible for your dorm and is able to put some pressure on that guy.
If he doesnt behave, he should be suffering consequences.

Its an apartment and the college is not affiliated to it. we have to take internet service separately from the service provider.

You and the rest of your dorm get a different connection, which you look after. If this guy want to hog the other connection then let him - and let him pay for it all.

This is not a technical problem, it's a sociological one and you have to bear that in mind when solving it.

Are you contributing to the cost of the internet? If so then its not right a single person has control over the internet like that.
Apparently Quick heal does have ARP protection. You basically want to block ICMP requests. If you head onto quick heals website and check the documentation it should tell you how.

its hard enough to stop people outside your network who are determined and know what they are doing

you have some one inside your network with free access to the router

in all honesty--you are screwed and no technical solution we can give you is going to help other than a second phone line and your own

internet contract--even then dos attacks would still be possible

in my opinion you only have 2 options--sit down and talk to your house mates about this

or strike back with some denial of service of your own and see how they like it

either way its an uncomfortable situation

Sometimes, someone needs to be voted off the island.

This is a people problem. You fix it by making him not doing this anymore.
Either he stops doing it on his own (this requires a sit down discussion), or you get and pay for another connection, or he lives somewhere else.

I think he is using access control to allow only his computer with his own mac address to connect .
Even after i change my mac address I cannot connect .
Is it possible that he is blocking my IP address and if so how do I change it ?? currently the setting have been saved to obtain IP address automtically.
Also If can I clone my mac address with his computer and will that cause any network issues??

Again: If the router is in his room, there is nothing you can do to change this. He can do simple things like pull your plugs or simply turn off WiFi and use a cable himself. Or even just put a metal mesh around the antennas and only leaving a spot for himself open.

There is N O T H I N G you can do if he has direct access to that router in his room. Talk to him or let someone talk to him that has power over him one way or the other.

As said earlier, physical control of the router trumps all.

You are trying to solve a social problem with technological workarounds.
If, indeed, he is blocking your devices at the router....he should not be doing that.

You have 4 basic options:
1. Discussion. "Dude, don't do that"
2. Get and pay for your own connection. Let him suck up the total cost of his.
3. Kick him out
4. You move to a different residence.

Is it only you that he is messing with?

well the router is in his room but he uses a PC where he cannot connect the router(its too far ) physically but he can login to the router wireless. I tried to have a conversation but he wont admit it .
Assuming he doesn't have physical control what can I do ? there has go to be something.. Should I download Wireshark will I be able to do anything using that??
