Peter_113,

I've had really good results and amazing reliability with M-Audio PCI sound cards, the 2496 and 192 :"Audiophile" series. These are duplex recording cards- you can listen to playback and record simultaneously and they have MIDI I/O.. These are great too as it gives a use to the lonely PCI slots that systems still provide.

These are not expensive:

M-Audio Audiophile 2496 4-in/4-out Professional PCI Audio Card with MIDI > sold for $27

M-Audio Audiophile 192 Soundcard Audio 64 bit > sold for $70

http://www.ebay.com/itm/M-Audio-Audiophile-192-Soundcard-Audio-64-bit-/321980493121?hash=item4af7886d41%3Ag%3Ai-AAAOSwX%7EdWnS-A&nma=true&si=fNmBZTsFyQpBpWmYmAiup9UlmvM%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

The 192 has a higher sampling rate and better signal to noise.

The connections will happen on the back panel. If you buy one of these, be very sure it includes the breakout cables.

I use these cards in all my systems- I have two 2496 and two 192's and since I first used these in 2006, none has ever failed, including the 2004 one I bought in 2008- still going, running the sound for my television machine in a Dell E520 output to a Logitech z313 2.2 sound system. The features may be more than you need, but if you ever wanted to make YouTube videos or record music, with the software and soft-sysnths on a MIDI controller you can record that symphony you've always wanted to do. I've made 100's of hours of recordings from piano and Yamaha S90 using these cards.

You didn't ask about the speakers, but I'd mention I've had very good results with a Logitech z2300 THX 2.1 system and I have two Logitech z313's 2.1 systems- only $30. The great thing about these is that they have a wired remote- on /off volume and the z2300 also has a subwoofer control and headphone jack.

Cheers,
