Hi guys.

So I've had some troubles over the past few days. I bought an Insignia 520W ATX Power Supply - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-520w-atx-power-supply-silver/5610116.p?id=1219144863171&skuId=5610116

No power. Everything connected but nothing works. I took it around to make sure that everything was plugged in, and sure enough, it was. I returned the power supply.

Then I bought this one:

Thermaltake - SMART Series 650W Bronze Power Supply - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/thermaltake-smart-series-650w-bronze-power-supply-black/8733872.p?id=1219365660388&skuId=8733872

And that made my PC start smoking. I've done all the necessary plugins (even the local PC shops made sure of that, again). How do I know what power supply works? Is there one I can buy right off the bat that you guys know of that would work?

The guy at Geek Squad (one of the places that checked this out, ugh) said that it didn't have the right connections for the power supplies they had. How do I know what's right for my mobo? I'll probably try the local Micro Center for the next run of power supplies so I'll have more options.

Edit: To help this discussion, I want to note that I've followed that list of instructions floating around here prior to this post.

Update: I think I found the problem. According to a guy who bought the Thermal on Amazon, it's missing a 4pin thingy.

"Con: there is NO 4pin ATX cable like most other PSU's. I had to buy a molex to 4pin ATX converter cable. For a PSU to this quality, they should had a 4pin ATX."

I don't understand what that means, but I guess I need an adapter for this particular PSU?

Solution
The board takes quite simply a 20+4 pin & a 12v 4 pin atx cable - every PSU has these connections at the very least - they've been the standard for over a decade now!!

The cheapest Id go if the evga 500w or 500b - they're budget but do a good job & definity fit the board as I've used that combo half a dozen times.

Is this a new build mate ???
If so you did install the motherboard standoffs in your case before fitting the motherboard - I'd hate to think the board is shorting out but it sounds plausible
You are welcome to post questions on this forum and they will get answered pretty quick, especially over the weekends, but do ask the questions before you steam ahead and do what you think is best. Your question is now reasonably irrelevant, because from your story it sounds like your motherboard is fried. The natural flow of questioning from your side would go like this:

Hey guys, I have this model motherboard "insert motherboard model here" and I want to upgrade my PSU, because I just added "insert newly added hardware here". What PSU would you recommend?

I'm sure there's plenty of guys and gals out there who would gladly help you make informed decisions, before you need to jump the gun and fry some more silicone.

Good luck!

Maybe I'll just upgrade. What's a decent mobo for a cheap price? And should I keep the Thermaltake? I mean, it'd be nice to get a mainline brand but if it works...

I really should have done so, but I thought I could just go for it and it'd be fine. Ugh.

Good news is that the mobo is fine. It works with the 350W it came with, so there's that. I just need to upgrade.
