I need a suggestion about components MB,RAM,etc for AMD FX-8350

Hi,

I'm looking for good motherboard, RAM, and other components for my 24/7 server.
I planned using AMD FX-8350 as my CPU, 16gb of RAM max, a good motherboard and some weak graphics card as its a least important thing.

The computer should be working 24/7 as a server (Debian 6) hosting game servers like hlds,srcds,cod4,samp,minecraft but mostly srcds and hlds and other multiplayer FPS games, and should get quite high performance from this CPU higher and stable FPS.

I'm wondering if I should go with Gigabyte or MSI motherborad or if you can suggest some motherboard that's in the similar price range.Because I heard that this MSI board with 970A chipset does not support directly FX-8350 and I need to apply a BIOS update and I can't do that at the moment.

As I've read the specs of those motherboards the onboard NIC is based on Realtek RTL8111E (10/100/1000 Mbit) I have a 100Mbps connection. Should I buy a separate NIC or use the onboard one. I need better ping and better network perofrmance.

My maximum budget for this PC is about 450 euros that's about $500.

If you can suggest some better components (MB,RAM,HDD,Power Supply,CASE,GPU) with lower or similar price please let me know.

get a 10/100/1000 switch to plug the server into then you can plug in your 100 to that or your existing router. I suggest plugging all pcs into the switch then connect the switch to the router/cablemodem.
The realtec nic will work fine but the intels work a little faster.

I tried finding a motherbd that would operate in headless mode ( w/o a GPU) but lacked success. Biostar used to make a few that were cheap and reliable. My servers been up 3 yrs now.

Both motherbds might require a bios update before working with the 8350. Gigabyte at least puts the bios version on the lable on the outside of the box if you have a pc store nearby.

My server is not going to be home, the company has pro network hardware, I don't need to worry about that. I'm just interested about the components quality and durability.

I need some quality and durable components with lower price similar to those I specified, or you can tell me if some of those components are good.

I'm going to use it only for game hosting I don't need high end graphics as Linux will be used as os without gui.

I have really good luck with intel atom server platforms. This build should get you what you need and will be very long term stable for a server. The SSD will allow for fast transfers and is one of the biggest improvements you can make to a server that needs to parse lots of data.

I priced this at $312.95 and it should be enough to run a game server as long as you are not trying to run the actual game on the server.

This server beats the recommendations for 45+ users on minecraft and COD4 i'm not sure, but a dedicated server doesn't need all that horsepower from an 8 core processor, it wont use it.

Same HD's just different hardware and the cost is $456. This would rock it real nice. The point of a server is to push lot's of data fast, you probably don't need the 1tb hard drive at all since most game servers are fairly small to begin with. This would support 16gb of ram but you probably won't need much more than 4, but 8 is nice too 16gb is a way more than you need.

So minus the 1tb HD you are looking at $376.95. That's a very good deal, you could use that extra cash to get a bigger ssd or more ram.

I need 8 logical cores, 32 GB RAM, a decent network card and a decent 1 TB hard drive. The rest, the ports, expansion slots, video, audio, lights, looks, etc is not important. That is the reason I am looking to build around the FX-8350 or similar power/price Intel/AMD.
We run Debian on our real servers and need the test station to also run Debian. For the real servers we go with dual cpu, raid, the whole enchilada, and the vendor usually makes sure the configuration is Debian compatible, but for the test workstations we go the consumer way and I want to avoid getting hardware that will not be compatible.

If your trying to VM, you will want more cores, I would suggest an i7 3930 if you want to get the most out of a VM server. It would be 12 cores 6 physical, 6 logical vs AMD's 8. But this would bust your budget for sure.

My real issue is finding a motherboard that will be compatible with Debian and a high end desktop processor. I can push up my budget if I know it will work.

looks like you need an intel chip that supports Intel EM64T Extended memory technology. That would be any chip beyond 2004 from intel. For AMD you need AMD64, so any chipset from Athalon on. So your CPU choices are vast and the MB that goes with it should not matter as long as they support the given CPU.
