I bought a Dell computer to do work and occasionally to play games. It came with an i7-4970k and 12gb of ram. The stock gpu I had was a gtx 745 4gb. I'm trying to update my gpu so I can run games at a higher frame rate and at 1080p easily. Currently I can only go a bit higher than 720p but my frame rate Is apx less than 25. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good gpu that I can run games 1080p easily at apx 60 fps

What make and model power supply have you got in it? It's no good recommending a card that you can't run.

It'll also have to fit in your case - make and model? VGA max length?

I gather i7 4790k. They go on dual channel ram mobos. Strange that you have 12gb ram. I thought you should have 2 x 4gb.

A next step, without breaking the bank, would be the GeForce 750 ti. This is a well-reviewed card that can run 1080p at a standard frame rate without needing a PSU connection (note that your PSU must provide at least 600w, however.) This card is just slightly underpowered for 60fps at 1080p however, even though it boasts this in the specs. Look for one that has at least 4gb memory and it should work perfectly for your application.

GTX 970. If you have the reccomended power supply... Dont listen to this mcdouble guy, as there will be a massive bottleneck with a 750ti and a 4790k.

The Geforce 970 would indeed be an excellent choice, and is one of the best values on the market for speed and performance. Given the specifications, and the fact that the user is not currently employing something powerful, I was recommending the 750ti to meet the minimum specified requirements of 1080p without a beefy power supply.
