I’m trying to build a PC and i’m stuck with the PSU choice at the moment.
I can only choose from these 2 due to prices and availability where I live.
Price is the same for both PSUs.

  1. The Corsair RM850e 2025 is ATX 3.1 rated B+ on SPL PSU Tier list.
  2. The Corsair RM850x 2021 is ATX 2.x rated A+ on SPL PSU Tier list.

I’d be running a 7800x3D with a Gigabyte 9070xt OC that uses 3x8pin connectors. I don’t think i’ll be upgrading anything in the next 7 years+

I think the main thing I’m worried about are power spikes with the RM-X. The GPU draws 305 max and I don’t know if I should get the RM-X that is better build or the RM-E that is ATX3.1 and should have Power Spikes

Which is where? Preferred site for purchase? Budget for your PSU purchase?

If you really are stuck with these two options and everything else is impossible to attain(which is arguable, as in, probably you're overspending on something else in your build) either PSU's will be a good purchase.

I have personally had very good service out of Corsair's RMx line of power supplies. IIRC the difference in the x/e line has to do with the caps and warranty where for the price difference I am familiar with makes the x the better choice with a longer warranty. IDK if those aspects have changed in newer models. Where it comes down to it, I have had excellent service and reliability out of every Corsair PSU I have ever purchased. I still service a system for a friend which is built around a now practically ancient CX series and still doing fine. (I do keep the dust bunnies to a minimum)

I’m just concerned that my pc might randomly shutdown due to a gpu powerspike

RM850x (2016) handles my 350W 3080 Ti just fine, it also uses 3 8-pin.

304W from the 9070 XT should be no problem.

RM850x ATX 2.x were built before the ATX 3.0 spec existed, doesn't mean they weren't intended for high end GPU edge cases. 2080 Ti and 3080/3090 spikes were one reason that standard was created.

Do you get random shutdowns due to the gpu power surge?

I can count on one hand the number crashes I have had with my 3080 Ti, ran a GTX 1080 for many years before that. I vaguely recall a reboot happening once while gaming, but that could have been anything from the system memory to a random power surge.
Thanks man, I’ll probably go with the rm-x then. Been asking around all day and this is the best answer ive gotten so far.
