Im considering upgrading the gaming pc I bought it in 2018, so before I buy I new, I wanted to ask if a "simple" upgrade would be better?
I currently have this setup:

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor 3.59 GHz
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
  • RAM: 64,0 GB DDR4
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte A520 Aorus Elite
  • OS: Windows 11 64-bit
  • Monitor: Predator XB1 27'' @144Hz
More RAM? A better GPU?

Hope you have some good pointers and advice :)

Thanks

The chances of more RAM helping are EXTREMELY low...unless you have some wierd purpose for the PC. We have no idea if that might be true.

What are your complaints? What problem are you trying to solve?

Or do just have an itch to spend some money?

What are your expectations or hopes if you did spend some money? What would disappoint you?

Dont have to change/spend money :) Just wanted to optimize my system. If I dont really gain any great, then I dont need to and will wait :)

Eximo

Titan

CPU and GPU are pretty easy to upgrade. Just depends on what your expectations are.

1080 Ti is still pretty decent, roughly an RTX 3060 12GB.

4070 Super, 4070 Ti Super would drop right in.

Ryzen 5700X3D or 5800X3D would certainly be an improvement in minimum FPS with little cost.

If I can assume that your objective is a better gaming experience:

Game performance is a balance between cpu capability and graphics capability.
Try this simple test:
Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
This makes the graphics card loaf a bit.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.
Your motherboard would support a 5800X cpu upgrade.
That is simple.
For gaming ONLY, a 5800X3d would be good, but any other work would not do as well as the 5800X.
To do better will require a motherboard change.

You have more than enough ram.
I doubt that increasing ram speed is worth it.

What is the make/model of your psu?
That may well determine how strong of a gpu upgrade.

When upgrading a graphics card, make it a BIG jump or you may be disappointed if you do not see magical results.
Skip a tier on tom's gpu hierarchy chart:
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html
Something in the 3070 class or better.
Price/performance differences between amd and nvidia are minimal.
I suggest you stick with nvidia for simplicity; the driver environment has a learning curve.

Thanks for all the advice. "Tom's gpu hierarchy chart" was really helpful. I did try to do a Benchmark test, but was full :(
I will start to look for a new GPU - its mainly gaming I use it for.
Any simple way to check which power supply I have?
