In the last week i can't download with 1MBps or better. I can achieve only 980 kBps. It is like this on both my desctop PC and my laptop. An employee of my ISP came today, ping the network (or whatever) i purchased a new router but still it is the same.
Any ideas ? Please help !!!

I'm located in Beloslav -> it is 20 km west from Varna, Bulgaria (on the Black Sea coast, Eastern Europe)
I'm paying for 50 Mbps since forever and usually i download torrents with 2-3-4-5 MBps. I download a movie 2-3 GB for les than 5 minutes.
But now it is much much slower...
I am connected directly to the router.

He should plug his computer directly into the cable modem first (or whatever internet modem they're giving you).... that's the only way to get the true speed the cable provider is giving you.

If that registers and says it's 50 mbps, then it's something with your router. then try the speed test on different computers connected to the router with ethernet cable and if both computers are not registering 50 mbps, then it's something wrong with your router. if one computer registers 50 mbps and one doesn't, then it's something wrong with your ethernet card/motherboard.

Today i bought a new router. So i guess problem can't be from the router. Am i thinking correctly ?
Also - i just ran the same speedtest on my laptop (wireless connected) and gives the same result.

Hey,

Try running the speedtest with a wired connection, or even connect a PC directly to your modem via ethernet and test it from there. If you get the same result (slow speed) then you know that its not your router. Then its likely your connection with your ISP, or you are being throttled for downloading too much (that varies from ISP to ISP).

Hope this helps!

No modem here (i think). My cable comes from a switch on the roof, goes to the router and the other cable from the router into the desctop PC.
To be throttled - no chance i think - I was talking directly to the owner of the company that is my ISP. So if i'm being trottled he would tell me that and i won't worry about it anymore.

I enable the mac filtering so no monkeys can get on my branch and ruin my connection.

Yes i am.
Could it be something from the cable - the cable to be damaged in some way.. and that damage to cause this problem.. Or if the cable is damage i will get no connection what so ever ?

Contact your ISP, it could be that your connection is throttled from their end and their support department is there to help you troubleshoot the issue. You are paying for the support, use it.

Did it yesterday. Today an employee came, pinged the newtwork and said that for them everything is O.K. He then tried to open the router menu but was loading inbelievable slowly so he suggested that probably the router is making some kind of problems. So i bought a new one. The menu loads quickly but the internet is with the same speed. I wish i unterstand about this kind of stuff a little bit more so i can help you understand my issue better but unfortunately i am lame... :)

If you're wired directly to the router, and still getting way below the advertised, paid for speed, contact the ISP.
Could be any one of a number of things. Some upstream switch dying, or the actual cable to the residence, or 20 other things.

I've sent him a screenshot with the speedtest via skype. Will talk to him as soon as he in online and accept the shot.
Thank you all for the help! You are all good and helping people! God bless you!

It is still their problem. Or whomever controls the router. You're paying for speed X. There is a reason why it isn't doing that.

Some years ago, I had an issue with my local cable provider. 2/3/4 times a week, the internet would drop out for hours a a time. TV and phone would still work, but no 'net.

Everything from the box on the corner, to my monitor got replaced. Everything.
It got so bad that I could predict to within 15 minutes or so when the signal would drop.

Eventually I convinced them that one of their upstream boxes was dying, and would drop connection based on temperature and humidity.

Yeah, I guess he must check his equipment. My ISP employee that came today lives 2 block of flats from me. He said he is downloading with 8MBps and i do it with 900 kBps. Must me somewhere between him and me. In this perimenter there must be a switch or something that is going bad....

ne thing that often gives people confusion is the difference between a Megabyte (used for file size) and a Megabit (used for download speeds). People often assume that a download speed of 1 Megabit per second (1 Mbps) will allow them to download a 1 Megabyte file in one second. This is not the case, a Megabit is 1/8 as big as a Megabyte, meaning that to download a 1MB file in 1 second you would need a connection of 8Mbps. The difference between a Gigabyte (GB) and a Gigabit (Gb) is the same, with a Gigabyte being 8 times larger than a Gigabit.

here is a converter

https://www.google.com/search?q=megabyte+megabit+converter

Megabits and Megabytes are different. A 50 Megabit (50 Mbps) connection works out to 8 Megabytes (8 MBps)

That is how they get you thinking you are getting faster speed than you are as most people don't realize the difference.
