Hey guys. I sold my nvidia gts 450 on ebay and I shipped it out. it worked perfectly. The buyer is saying that it doesnt work at all. Does anyone know how i could prove that its not working. What do I do?

Hey,

when you were creating your listing you should have stated that you do not accept returns, I always do when selling PC hardware. Anyone can buy your GPU, do something to damage it and then ask for the money back.

You should contact eBay and ask how to proceed. They have a whole team dealing with stuff like that.

Yea I listed it as no returns. Who should I contact on ebay about this. I feel that he did in fact break the graphics card to get his money back.

And if you agree to a full refund with money and parts exchanged back and forth.....did you record the actual serial number before you sent it?
You can send the money back, and he can return a completely different busted gts 450.

Contact ebay/paypal.

I do not have a picture of the serial number. The guy it totally trying to scam me. He sent me this when I asked for proof in pictures of the broken graphics card.

"Hello Again,
That would be great except now I cant get the computer to run right at all after trying the card in the last one that had the ATI in it and Im having to do a complete recovery on the darn system right now. There is no way im putting that card back in the computer. Im 1/4 of the way threw a system image restore on the system as it didn't work right again when I put the old card back in!
And that is one I built for a customer who was going to pick it up tonight and now he cant! You can call me like I said at <Edit: phone num removed> or send me your number and Ill call you! The GTX system just walked out the door about 15 minuetes ago!
Bill"

What do I do? Hes totally making this up. On his bio on ebay it says this which is total bs!

"Im A disabled Vet, married for 36 Years with 4 kids who can no longer work as I broke my back 7 years ago now and Im Still trying to get my SSI going. My only income is building and repairing computers right now & E-bay a big help. Pic is my 79 RS"

Hey everyone. He just called me and somehow found out my number.

This is between you, him, and ebay/paypal.
Not sure what we out here can do for this.

I contacted ebay and they said they would review his account . He just sent me this message. What should I say? Do you guys think that he is telling the truth?

"Hello Again Phillip,
Yes I have tried to call you 2 times now and can not get you on the phone! I don't want to open a case against you if at all possible as you are new to e-bay and would hurt your seller & buyer reputation real bad.
However, as I told you when I purchased the card. Im disabled and my only income is what I make building and selling computers right now! That is why I asked for the best offer deal as I explained to you. I cannot afford to ship this thing back to you but am more than happy to return it to you as long as I get a full refund. As I bought the card as a used working card that dosent work at all. E-bay would tell you that isn't my fault and as the seller it is your responsibility to make sure I receive a full refund. And they will also tell you that the return shipping in accordance to e-bay seller rules is on you.
I know that sounds crappy but I would have to do the same thing had I sold the card. Didn't you say you insured the card when you shipped it? If that is true you should be able to collect it all back from the post office!
Either way. Im going to need to get my money back and I truly do not want to have to open a case against you if at all possible! If you look at my feedback both as a seller and buyer its 100%. And that is because I always make it right weather buying or selling. So lets work this out if we can.
I could just open a case and be done with it and I know id get my money back! But that would hurt you and I don't want to do that! Ive been on E-bay since 1995 and I know how this works! Call me if you can!
Again my number is in your e-mail and ill give it to you again. Its <Mod Edit>. Im not lying to you the card is no good!

Bill"

and

"Phillip,
Im still trying to get that computer to recover after that card was installed and I think it may have damaged my motherboard on this machine! And its a Asus Formula striker II. Hell I might be out a motherboard out of this to the way its looking right now!
And that falls on me because I tried to install a used Graphics Card!
Bill"

Hey guys, I just got the graphics card back (ebay sided with the buyer(as always), and I had to pay return shipping).

The graphics card works completely fine. It does smell a little smokey and there is some residue on the back.
What should I do? Should I report that it works fine and that it smells smokey to ebay? Or should I just leave it be and relist the item?

I dont know. It doesnt affect the performance of the card. And Ive read that I can maybe use some alcohol to get the sticky residue off and it might remove the smoke smell too. And you cant smell the smoke smell from far away.

Remind me not to buy anything from you on ebay.

lol at least i dont lie about stuff and force the seller into loads of stress and work.

Anyways thanks for all of your guys help. Im glad to have this great community thats always there to help me.

I'm no expert but installing a faulty graphics card shouldn't break the mobo or corrupt the data, right? If it doesn't work, the computer should just use the iGPU.

As for the residue, coolant to try and OC it? That sure could crash the computer..

Try installing it on your computer again, see if it works, if not, sue him or whatever you Americans do 😉

I tried to read this thread from a "what if he's not lying" point of view, and my scam-sense is not tingling. I believe the card didn't work in his system for whatever reason. Unfortunately you had to pay for his lack of knowledge. At least you got your card back....

What you do is have the buyer return it to you and you refund the money. Unless you want to cheat the buyer and keep his money.

Is everybody forgetting that the buyer acquired phclyde's phone number without phclyde giving it to him? Seems kind of strange how the buyer could do that, especially if he is just some "disabled vet." It also seems like a strange coincidence that this guy is a disabled vet, who's been married for 36 years, has 4 kids, broke his back, uses eBay as his primary form of money-making, and joined eBay the very year it was founded...1995. Every cover-up in the book for a online con man. That's a con man if I ever saw one.

Also, what kind of tech savvy man would try to overclock a used GTX 460 GPU, especially as soon as he got it? I thought he was a disabled vet with 4 kids and a wife to take care of. A man like that wouldn't spend time overclocking GPU's when he could be buying parts and selling finished computer rigs so he could take care of his family. Why didn't the buyer send any pictures to phclyde when he asked for proof? This situation requires a full-scale investigation.

Don't pay a nickel , seen this scam lots of times. IF YOU sent it in anti static wrapping and very well packaged, then you have no worries as you did your best ,
Worst case senario, tell him you will meet him 1/2 way somewhere with at a free laywers place and take along a computer tech from that area as that will save money and will be a neutral judge of the product. Bet he won't call your bluff. If he does, theres always Canada. (unless you already live there) Alaska?

I've seen this happen before, and chances is, he didn't remove the ATI drivers before installing your card. Anything that happened afterwards must be his doing, trying to fix something that was never broken.

His 100% rating must come from the fact that so many people leave reviews, before they are able to test anything out.

Be the one to tell your side of the story, and leave the negative review behind. There's not much eBay will do now, wether it does or doesn't work, but at least talk to them so any negative notes on their end are removed. Don't ask for much, and be pleasant about it the whole time through; that's the most important thing.

I literally just went through this with someone last week. I sold a motherboard through eBay, and four days after receipt, the guy claimed that the CPU socket pins were bent. He tried to get angry with me and submitted a refund request, so I sent him a reply with pictures of the board (including serial #) and the boxing up process. I told him everything worked fine, that I've had run-ins with eBay scammers before, and I invited him to open a case to reclaim his money if he really had a problem with the board. Within 20 minutes, he rescinded his refund request. That website is crawling with scammers. Make him open a case. Negative customer reviews be damned.
