I just purchased two sticks of 512 MB DDR PC3200 ram, with the Infineon name on it. The serial number on the individual chips is HYB25D256800BT-5. Much to my surprise, I found this number under the 256Mb DDR SDRAMs at infineon.com. Here is the link, its the seventh one down:

http://www.infineon.com/cgi/ecrm.dll/ecrm/scripts/prod_ov.jsp?oid=13529&cat_oid=-8005

Have I been duped? Also, the fact that it is 3/3/3 isnt very good now, is it? I got it from a Chinese guy, along with the MSI Neo2 board and a 2.4C processor. I have no doubts about that; its just this memory.

Can someone tell me whats going on, and how I can get to the bottom of this?

heya VMoura;

you forgot to tell us if you put the memory in the system and found it to actually be 256x2, or wether it read as 512x2, this information would be helpfull, but in any case WHATS THE BOGGLE, if the memory is reading as 2x256 then take it back and say, you gave me the wrong ram friend, hook me up with the right stuff, and if he refuses then threaten to call the BBB and or to press charges and sue his ass.

I have not assembled my comp yet. I am still missing case and video card. I have everything else. Surely, there must be a way to figure this out without having to physically insert it, by the ID number on the chips itself.

Hey man,

This is the website where the RAM that i bought is listed. I have printed it out for documentation purposes. Look at the DDR Pc3200 512MB 400Mhz for $129 a stick (Canadian dollars):

http://www.csdweb.net/products/memory/memory.htm

There is a sticker on each stick that says 512MB DDR Ram PC3200. Thats all. Then i checked the chip and encountered this problem.

Is it because it is DDR or something, and therefore it is a 256 stick that does x2? I dont think so.

i dont understand this...a ram chip may be used in 256mb sticks...but what is stopping the manufacturers of the sticks to put double the amount of ram chips and selling it as 512? If the memory stick is double sidded (16 chips) and the 256mb module you found with the same part nubmer was 8chips or fewer (singel sidded) then you can be very sure that you have not been "duped"

There is no smell better than fried silicon :evil:
