I want to modernize my pc and I need an advice.

If you are not really too much into getting every ounce of power from a video card then I would personally go for at nVidia 7600. Then use the extra 200 you were willing to spend just on the video card and use that to upgrade beyond the 3200 and get a x2 4200.

To be frank, I'll be using this pc mostly for gaming...
Prozac : thanks for the recommendation, did you have any specific card in mind?

Greetings!

Here are my plans :

1. Kingston DDR 2 x 1GB PC-400 CL3
http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator/PartsInfo.asp?ktcpartno=KVR400X64C3AK2/2G
2. I've about 400 $ for a graphics card.
I was thinking about GeForce 6800GS Gainward Bliss PCX TV-DVI 512MB (PCI-E) GS GLH.
3. A mainboard with a suitable processor ( I've no clue on that one...). I can spend no more than 250 $ on these.

Could someone help me? :)

$950.. ok lers see

1. RAM- I perfer Corsair XMS or OCZ Gold 2x1GB
Right now the XMS RAM is $194 at Newegg with a $40 MIR. So go with that.

2) As other posters have said, get a 7900GT.
EVGA 7900GT 256MB- $319.00.. good choice will be in stock on Tuesday.

3) Agree with Prozac on the motherboard and CPU choice. Motherboard is $95 and the 3200+ is $154.

So lets see for $950:

RAM- $194 before MIR
Video Card- $319
CPU/Mobo- $248

Total: $761.00 before $40 MIR on RAM
So, if you really have $950 to spend, you can afford a better CPU.
Opteron 165 is a nice choice, can be be overclocked nicely. You also gain 1MB L2 cache per core vs only 512KB total on the 3200+

so:

RAM- $194 before MIR
Video Card- $319
CPU/Mobo- $420

Total: $933

Unfortunately I don't have access to the newegg (I'm European). The selection and prices here are more or less the same, but I can't get the EVGA 7900GT 256MB and those Corsair XMS ( I can get the Corsair XMS2 Pro DDR2 2x 1GB 800MHz though) at the shop I intend to buy those parts.

Don't get DDR2 if you're buying a current AMD processor. They need DDR.

Here's what I think I'll buy :

-Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra

-GeForce 7900 GT Leadtek Extreme 256MB HDTV & 2xDVI (PCI-E)

I'm not sure about that one, though. I've heard the Ati cards are better...

How about Radeon X1800XL Sapphire 256MB VIVO / 2xDVI ?

-AMD Athlon 64 3200+ BOX (Socket 939) Manchester

- Kingston DDR 2 x 1GB PC-400 CL3 or Corsair VS DDR 2x 1GB 400MHz.

How does it look?

Looks good, consider a dual core processor they are ~300 if you can afford it. Also go with the Corsair XMS RAM.

Corsair TwinX DDR 2x 1GB 400MHz C3
(http://www.corsair.com/corsair/products/specs/twinx2048-3200.pdf)
or
Corsair TwinX DDR 2x 1GB 400MHz C2
(http://www.corsair.com/corsair/products/specs/twinx2048-3200c2.pdf) ?

As for the dual core processor...I don't think I can afford that. Thanks anyway :)

I'm still unsure about a graphics card, though...

use this if you wanna go value

and this if wantee the preformance way

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145486

Nice and cheap ^^

How much money are you willing to spend?

Here's a small wish list with a value of 810$ (HDD, PSU, case NOT included😛)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131530
92.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145579 133

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103562
295

So on: 520.99

Eye candy:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130222 259

They're not as nice as a 400$ vidcard, but those bucks were relocated in a best processor

you could even use 50+$ for the premium ram

Here's current and possibly final list :

- Hiper HPU-4S480 (http://www.hipergroup.com/English/products/hpu-4s480.html)
- AMD Athlon 64 3200+ BOX (Socket 939) Manchester (http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/details.aspx?opn=ADA3200DKA4CG)
- Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra
- Corsair TwinX DDR 2x 1GB 400MHz C2(http://www.corsairmicro.com/corsair/products/specs/twinx2048-3200c2.pdf)
- Radeon X1900XTX Sapphire 512MB VIVO / 2xDVI Full BOX (http://www.sapphiretech.com/en/products/graphics_landing.php?gpid=136)

I'd aim for either of the Athlon 64 3800+ CPUs to pair with the rest of that hardware.

One is clocked +20% on that A64 3200+

The other has a 2nd core and is clocked the same as that A64 3200+

You need to remember that timedemos don't hit the CPU that hard, as they can be predicted / pre-fetched with high accuracy.

Minimum FPS (vs Average or Maximum FPS) can be CPU limited.

The jump from 2 GHz to 2.2 GHz is noticable in Half-Life 2 more than the jump from a Radeon X1900 XT to Radeon X1900 XTX is.

Just my 2c

But then, I suppose it would be easier to buy a better processor somewhere in the future, no? :) At any rate, what do you suggest?

Yes sir. I agree with that. The X1900XT and the X1900XTX is hardly any different. I don't see why folks wanna pay $50 more for the XTX.

Too bad 🙁

well, then go for the 3200 and overclock it (if you want to) and save for a dual core processor, you can save for 3-5 months and get one, or even half a year, and still it would be pretty awesome by then (unless conroe really is what it "seems")

The 7900gt is a great card, has lots of room for OC'ing, the x1800xt 512mb is a crisp card as well, it gives a good space for Ocing and has better Image quality than the 7900gt.
My verdict, get the 7900gt, WHY??
if you have a sli mobo, once you get more $$$ get another 7900gt and run in SLI, 2 cards are better than one. With those 2 in you case, performance will become insane, whereas the X-fire will not performa as well as SLI.

I've made slight changes :

- Hiper HPU-4B580 (http://www.hipergroup.com/English/products/hpu-4b580.html)
- AMD Athlon 64 3200+ BOX (Socket 939) Manchester (http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/details.aspx?opn=ADA3200DKA4CG)
- Corsair TwinX DDR 2x 1GB 400MHz C2(http://www.corsairmicro.com/corsair/products/specs/twinx2048-3200c2.pdf)
- Radeon X1900XTX Sapphire 512MB VIVO / 2xDVI Full BOX (http://www.sapphiretech.com/en/products/graphics_landing.php?gpid=136)

As for the mainboard...My first choice was - Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra, but perhaps I should get something better?

By the way...I have a ATA 133 HDD, will I be able to use it with those components? Another thing is the encasing, it has 2 years...Is that a problem?
