I've purchased another HDMI cable for the Dell but the Dell doesn't show that the cable is connected. Also, I don't want the sound comming from the monito's speakers. I want the sound to come frome my computer's external surround sound speakers. How doI do that?

Connect the Dell with the DVI cable. HDMI is just DVI+HD Audio. If you don't know, the DVI connector looks as follows:
