Hello,

Trying to decide if I need to upgrade my CPU for my planned GPU upgrade? I have a 4070 super, but am looking into the RTX 5080. The 4070 Super is just on the fringe for 4k and works well for most games, some others I need to use DLSS/not use RT. I figure the 5080 will get me closer to having more games above 60 fps (I know it's not the greatest upgrade), and I flat out can't afford a 4090/5090.

Wasn't sure if the 12400 would cause issues with a 5080 in 4k? I know the CPU is barely used in 4k, at least that's my experience looking at CPU usage. I was going to upgrade to a 13th/14th gen Intel but all of the issues scared me away.

Thanks,

Unsure but a budget option if you do feel a need to upgrade the cpu, you could grab a 12600kf for under $150 most likely.
That was my goal. After I sell my 12400 the 12600k ends up being only like $80 or so. Again, not the best use of money, but it's either that or upgrade my entire mobo and get Ryzen. I refuse to touch Intel 13/14th gen.

No idea how much of a difference the 12600k would show in 4k gaming, if any.

Why not?

Midrange 14th gen is just fine and makes much more sense as an upgrade, compared to upgrading 12400 to 12600k.

Might as well get everything you can reasonably can from that platform. And yes, I know all them horror stories, but they got fixed and they are more relevant to the higher end offerings of that generation anyway.

There were multiple "Fixes" so far. I Just don't feel comfortable taking the risk tbh, and judging by what you see online that seems to be the common opinion with 14th gen overall because of how it all played out.

Also, there are issues with 14th gen midrange as well. Every 14th gen I5 is on the affected list right from intel. Except the 14400. Which if you read up actually does also have issues. It might not be likely, but why take the risk?

What about AMD B650 with a 7700 is going to give you great upgradability 7800x3d 9800x3d at some point

you could be nerfing your new 5080 anyway pcie x16 is going to be running at 5.0 gen not the current 4.0

make sure you check the specs of the b650 as some run 4.0 pcie x16 in the itx boards

AM5 is the better platform by far at the moment !!

Dealing anything with intel at the moment is crazy there is no upgrade option that is worth it !

With the current graphics solution on this setup and in the game or application you are using what manner of CPU usage are you seeing?
I'll have to double check, but it's laughably low in 4k lol I think in FF7 Remake, I was around 60% GPU usage and 3% CPU usage. I might not even need a CPU upgrade at all since I am in 4k. I genuinely wasn't sure. But i know the 5080 is going to be a decent amount better than the 4070 Super and didn't want to run into issues if the CPU couldn't keep up.

My current B660 I is actually pcie 5.0 already. If I can use the 12400 comfortably at 4k with a 5080, I'd rather not upgrade at all.

I'd only be upgrading if it was necessary because of the bump in performance from the 5080.

Gotcha, yeah I mean even if you are concerned about 13/14th gen (I am as well) the CPU below 65W are supposedly fine and no increased reports of failure. Even if you went with a non-K 14th gen skew it would be a nice uplift in performance and should work well if there is any problem to begin with.

If your playing in 4k yes your going to have some nerfs using the 12400k thats a given but i highly doubt its going to be devastatingly bad using a 5080 on it !!

Like i said intel is all but dead and personally upgrading anything intel is a waste of money over AMD

I have the 14600kf paired with the ARC770 16gb for my all Intel fun build and the 14600kf is a decent CPU but
I still think Intel cpu upgrades at this point is still a waste of money !!

If you looking at a new CPU still better to go AM5 ..

Yeah, for sure. If I do upgrade, it will be a full switch to Ryzen. Hoping I won't need to though.

What would be the Ryzen to get right now? I was looking at the 7600x and 9600x.

depends on you're budget 5080 is going to be around the 1000 to 1400usd price ( reference aib's )

A decent enough b650 isnt overly expensive

x670e would be better if we are talking upgrades 9800x3d 7800x3d

as for CPU right now the 7700 non x over everything .. 7800x3d sold out 9800x3d sold out there is a bit of MEH with the 9000series yes there are gains but small at a higher cost ..

7700 is a great little cpu easy to cool , cheaper and a solid performer !!

7600x likes to hit it TJ max 95c all the time .. ( i actually slapped a 420mm actric freezer ii on one as a place hold as such for the 7800x3d and it was hitting 75c allcore r23 )

7700 is the 8 core product i build a 7700 6800xt PC using a 280mm aio for my friend and its been perfoming like a champ for over a year now no issues !! super cool no issues
