i5 6600K overclocking advise to 4.6Ghz

Hi all

i just upgraded my pc and need some info.
i've been reading many threads, But never found the answer i was looking for

i have :
Intel i5 6600k Skylake
Gigabyte z170x GAMING 3
16gb DDR4 @ 2666mhz
cooler : H100i (with sp120 Quiet edition fans)
GTX 980 Strix (overclocked it)
250Gb SSD + 2x1TB HDD (no raid)
coolermast 850w power supply

the stock cpu is 3.5Ghz , boost 3.9Ghz

So this is what i did to overclock it :

i adjusted the multiplier to 44 and and it is stable without adjusting the voltages
i used prime95 for couple hours, and had no issues

now i wanted to try to go to 4.6 /4.7 if possible

when i tried 4.6 , i got a blue screen
so i adjusted the vcore to 1.350 . got in windows and tested it with Prime95
i stopped prime95 after half-hour because one core stopped working.. (rest was still testing)

i"ve read that u need to increase the vcore to go further
so i raised the vcore to 1.4v
when running prime95 , one core still stopped working

Im kinda afraid to push it over 1.4V since i want to use my CPU daily


So what do i need to do get it stable?

When i put the multiplier to 45 with 1.4V , i have a stable overclock

The max temperture i had on my CPU is 63 C (145F)

1.4v is encroaching on the dangerous end of voltages, there is nothing you can do to get it stable at 4.6 without raising voltages to dangerously high levels

I heard the most stable freq. in OCing the 6600K is 4.4GHz. Truth is to save your CPU and go for 4.0GHz and stay there otherwise you might burn it out. Then again, it is your money and your computer and hope for the best results.
Join the Over Clockers Club or other folks that do OCing for fun but also kind of serious to peak things to the max before they burst. Enjoy!

I will soon have the Gigabyte Ga-z170x-Gaming 3 MoBo. Have you encountered any problems. Heard that using 4 sticks of memory causes problems. I will be using Adata XPG Z1 DDR4 16GB (2x8GB) 2800MHz and Intel i7 6700K CPU and Nvidia GTX 970. Having my desktop built by CyberPowerPC

I wouldnt run a voltage of 1.4V on skylake, try to keep it below that for any overclock you achieve. Your only going to experience higher thermal and cpu degradation for a few 100mhz. Thats not worth it in my opinion. Keep it around 1.35 for daily use.

after alot of reading i decided to stay on 4.4Ghz
the only thing i had to do is put the mulitplier to 44
the max CPU Vcore tested is 1.249 .. so thats pretty good.
had my cpu tested with prime95 overnight, had no crashes.
so i have a pretty stable OC

the funny thing is , intel says that skylake is built to stand 1.52v ???
altough i never read one article that someone says they used this..

I set my voltage to auto
and after doing multiple tests, its stable and OC'd at 4.4

im happy with it and i know i wont be killing my CPU

I would not set your voltage to auto. Keep an eye on your max voltage now as on auto it is free to overvolt your cpu as it pleases. I have seen users reporting unsafe voltages being applied under load. Thats why setting a manual low voltage is safer then auto. Plus when the voltage spikes, so does your temperature. Of course your OC is stable since now it is able to pull whatever voltage necessary. Either set it back to manual or atleast set it to adaptive so it will only apply a maximum amount under load and then drop when its not.

4.4Ghz sounds like a nice sweet spot on your CPU, I'd set it to that with a manual voltage of around 1.3v or as low as it will safely go. Once you've got it stable maybe bump it up by 0.02v or something just to be sure.

I've overclocked quite a few Skylake chips now and they usually top out at between 4.4 - 4.7Ghz. Anything higher than that is usually unstable or requires you to go higher than 1.4v. I like to stay under 1.36 - 1.38v personally.

have you ever done it on a Gigabyte Z170x Gaming3 motherboard?
i can only see the Vcore
is there anything else i should adjust aswell?

Nah I'm usually on ASUS boards, you only usually need to change the vcore unless you're going for extreme overclocks.

im just a little bit concired about the voltage my pc is using when i use hardware monitor

my cpu shows 2x times up

under the category motherboard + CPU (i5 6600k)
the vcore on my motherboard shows voltage of max 1.7V !!
however under the category CPU , it shows only 1.3V max

currently i set my bios back to default. and the motherboard CPU category shows voltages up to 1.52V (no overclock)

should i be concired ?
i tryd gaming with these 'abusurd ' voltage messurements
and after 3-4 hours, i had no problems nor heat problems..

one is : Motherboard vcore cpu
and the other one is : I5 6600K

Yeah that's the vcore voltage and it is far too high. I wouldn't go above 1.4v personally.

The funny thing is, i got it like this from my pcstore.. Im thinking the mesurement is not correct.. Even when i manually set my vcore to 1.3v it still saying its using 1.5v volt. Think i will contact the store and ask for some info

I immediately turned it to manual found that 1.2v was stable for stock then i turned my vcore setting to adaptive. Run it in manual to find lowest setting a stability then set it to adaptive.

I just received a mail from my pcstore. the readings are fine. hardware monitor is showing the vcore of the cpu @1.24V
so im stable and safe.
the readings of 1.5V is the usage of VRM's of the motherboard.
i set my OC to 4.4Ghz @ 1.3V vcore and its stable

Intel's official Skylake max core voltage is 1.5V. Silicon lottery regularly benches their chips at 1.43V at full load. I run my i3 @ 1.425V. You're safe
