I actually think the i5 8500 is worth it, it's increase in gaming performance compared to the i5 8400 is only 2% , however it supports most of intel's latest technologies while the i5 8400 doesn't.

Wrong. The 8500 is just a higher binned i5 compared to the 8400.

I'd recommend to get the 8500 because it's not much more expensive and it's a bit better.

At Newegg they are $25 apart in price, the 8500 is not $25 worth of more performance. You'd be better off putting that $25 towards a gaming videocard or more memory, depending on your usage and what you have budgeted for those items at this time.

When it comes to the base frequency, the 8500 is ~7% better. The 8500 also costs ~5% more. I'd say it's a better buy.
