Right not my cpu is the old i5 2500k and since the new 900 series graphics cards came out, I have been thinking of getting a 970 instead of a i7 3770k. Is this a good idea. My current gpu is the awesome but old gtx 460. I play games like EU4, CK2, and any total war game, so please don't base your suggestions on BF4, Crysis 3, or other triple A titles. I also render videos so keep that in mind too.

Agree with most people here, the 2500k is still a solid cpu, a 970 will be a more juicy upgrade, and dont worry about the pci express 2.0 issue, you'll not feel any kind of bottleneck there.
The games you play are mostly CPU oriented, Video Card wont add anything.
Editing Video is also CPU oriented so I would recommend to upgrade CPU unless you play with RTS as well.
One thought, why don't you keep the money until u can afford an i7 of last generation? And don't bother buying a "K" processor if you are not going to overclock, instead, see if you can get a better base clock speed CPU for the same money.

hope it helps.

I do see now that your games are more cpu oriented, but I still say that the jump from 460-970 is huge and will be the most beneficial. As for rendering videos, the cpu is better, but you have to gauge the value of how much rendering you do. Also, the gpu comes into play a lot these days in many video editing apps. You have a powerful cpu still, I say keep it.
