Question i7 4790k with stock cooler?

Good day everyone! On my old build I have a Core i7-4790k at stock speed(4-4,4ghz)(I know, I know) and a intel cooler from an i5 4th. Should I be fine if I apply a decent thermal paste(which one from arctic MX-2 or MX-4?) and install this cooler? My case has 1fan in the back for exhaust so some airflow 'exist'. An aftermarket cooler that it's not that expensive for me is Zalman Performa+. What do you think, guys?

Thermal paste doesn't matter a whole bunch. Unless you start talking liquid metal cooling, which isn't needed in many circumstances. The application is usually slightly more important than the paste itself.

Depends on exactly what i5 the cooler has come from, but if it was say:
4th Generation 22 nanometer i7-4790K / i5-4690K (TDP 88W / Idle 2W),
Then it should be fine as I believe the cooler is the same between the two.

The cooler is from an i5 4460. So, you say I could buy even a cheaper thermal paste but could get decent temps with a good application

By the way, is worth to buy an aftermarket cooler if I will not do any oc?

Fire&Cold,

Intel specifies the same 95 Watt TDP cooler (PCG 2013D) for both the 88 Watt TDP i7-4790K and the 84 Watt TDP i5-4460.

i7-4790K - https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/80807/intel-core-i7-4790k-processor-8m-cache-up-to-4-40-ghz.html

i5-4460 - https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/80817/intel-core-i5-4460-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-40-ghz.html

Intel's 95 Watt TDP cooler is a "universal" design that's been specified for many processor generations with TDP values ranging from 77, 84, 88 and 95 Watts. Although both the 95 Watt and 65 Watt stock coolers are aluminum and appear to be identical at first glance, the 95 Watt cooler is easily distinguished from its 65 Watt counterpart by a solid copper insert that's visible from the bottom.
