I7 980X @ 4.5 GHz. are temp and volt safe?

Solution
If it was me I would stick with the 4.3Ghz 1.35v, back in the day I had a 950 that would run 4.6Ghz all day long but it was under a custom water loop, or 4.9Ghz @ 1.52v on the adventures weekends 😀 but for everyday use I would clock it down to 4.2Ghz. I never really saw much in performance gains in games with the extra .4Ghz and that was paired with dual 580s and they were OC'd till they were screaming for mercy @ 1001Mhz and a voltage mod on the bios.

Its all what you feel comfortable with, Prime95 is the worse case scenario when it comes to heat on the cpu. Even with heavy gaming you will never see the temps as high as what you see with Prime95.

Yeah i now where you came from. X58 is a pretty great platform. The old I7 920 i had cut run up to 4.4 GHz at 1.45 vcore. But 4.9 GHz on these old chips is amazing non the less. Must have been a golden chip or some thing.

Right now i have two GTX 970 in sli in the system. That is a desent performer.

I just got done rebuilding the computer after it laid around my room for 5 years.

Asus rampage 3 extreme
i7 975, upgrade from the 950 and next time I drain the loop will upgrade to a X5680 xeon
12GB Mushkin ridgeback
4 GTX 670 superclock+ with 970 waterblocks, will swap out for 970's later this year once prices drop a little more
EVGA G2 1600w

Havent tried overclocking at all yet with this, it actually turned into my work computer
