IBM 75Gxp Interface only ATA-100?

Hi,
I looked on the IBM homepage for specifications and on other web pages with reviews of this drive and it seems for me like it only supports ata-100 and ata-66. Since, my MB is only ata-33, but I would need the drive right now and taking in consideration that in the near futur i will upgrade to ata-100 I would need to know if it support ata-33.

Well, I'm not going to guarantee you this, but as far as I've seen, all hardrives are backward compatible with previous interfaces, so the IBM should work just fine at ATA-33, it should even work at the oldest IDE standard that I know of, PIO mode 0. For example I have an Maxtor ATA-100 capable drive working just fine in an older BX motherboard that only supports ATA-33. I'd go ahead and make the purchase, you really shouldn't have any problems whatsover.

I have a 46.1GB 75GXP on a pre-ATA33 mobo, and it works fine (a little slow though). It will work fine on your mobo. It was one of the few things I could upgrade now and still use in next computer.

You won't have any problems with the drive. They are all fully backwards compatible. All the 75GXP needs to get the full performance out of it is an ATA66 controller. THe drive itself will burst at rates higher than ATA33 and thus you would notice a fair increase in speed with the ATA66 controller. The ATA100 controller would not make any difference over the ATA66 in terms of speed but would leave more room for upgrading in the future, besides the fact that you could get an ATA100 controller for the same price as ATA66. It will be quite a few months before any IDE hard drive needs the extra headroom provided by an ATA100 controller.

All that aside, you have a fantastic drive in the 75GXP. Enjoy

You may want to note that sustained transfer rates are just above the ATA33 standard - but not by much.

ATA-100 is backward compatible with ATA-33 so yes, you could use ATA-100 with your current mobo. You could also stick a ATA-66 or ATA-100 controller in your PCI slot and run the drive from your controller, but it would show too little performance increase to justify the cost.

The 75Gxp has a peak sustained transfer rate of 37 MB/sec. The ATA-33 spec allows 33MB/sec, ATA-66 alows 66MB/sec, and ATA-100 allows 100MB/sec. If upgrading to an ATA-66 or ATA-100 controller, you would see a 4MB/sec increase in performance, and this would only be at rare times when your hard drive is under full load.
