IBM's died...what's best for RAID 0?

Well, I guess it was bound to happen. One of the Deskstar 60's on my RAID 0 setup just up and died, leaving me without the opportunity to retrieve my data. (sniff)
Of course, I didn't back stuff up, I felt I was immune

Now, obviously I need to upgrade the hard drives, but not sure what to go with. I'm looking for the fastest read/write speeds. I was thinking about the fluid bearing Maxtors, but not sure.

Any suggestions?

ABIT KR7A-133R with Highpoint 372 raid
AXP 1800

One dead IBM Deskstar 60GXP Build date 12/01
One good IBM Deskstar 60GXP Build date 05/01
(yep, the newer drive died first)

Buy the Maxtors, I have 5 running 24/7 for 6 months now with my critical data in a 0+1 setup with nightly tape backups. They are fast, cool and quiet enough. I do not have fluid bearing drives, they are difficult to find here in the Netherlands, but I have heard that they are slightly quieter.

Cool, I'll look into the Maxtors. I was thinking of getting the fluid bearing drives since they're quieter, but not sure if they're worth the extra money.

Seems to be that the controller chip went on the IBM drive since I cannot get it recognized on the bios when installed on the primary IDE. The other drive does get recognized. Anyone know if I can have IBM replace the controller board so I can get back my data?

i think you can. you have to require a RMA then send them back the drive. they will fix it and you will be able to get back your data but maybe they'll say you can use it again. it is possible you have bought a faulty product.

Well, surprise surprise, IBM won't RMA the drives because they are OEM's. Ah well, but for some odd reason, both drives are working individually and are passing the IBM DFT (Drive Fitness Test) even in advance.

Which makes me wonder, is it the RAID controller that is causing this? If I re-create the RAID 0 using the same parameters, will it still delete the data? Right now, it shows both drives but it doesn't show a RAID existing. Also, is it possible to move this array to another board with the same onboard controller and will it recognize the existing array?

Any advice?

< I re-create the RAID 0 using the same parameters, will it still delete the data >

no, i have had already this situation and i have recovered my data from my both disks.

RAID 0 needs reliable HDD and probably the Maxtor D740 is the most reliable HDD on the market. Maybe is not the fastest, but I'd go to Maxtor.

Thanks for the info. You have great raid performance and I was curious.
