IDE Performance / Channels

I suspect that you would probably get better IDE performance by putting devices on separate channels. i.e. One Channel for the harddisk and a separate channel for the DVD/CD-ROM. Is this true? Has anyone tested this out?

Bump for JC! Especially true with DVD burner. Keep it on it's own channel if possible. You can put a slave optical drive with it if you have to, but no hard drive please!
