[citation][nom]Draven35[/nom]Soldered in RAM? seriously, what is this, 1986?[/citation]

Even in those good old days of the PC, individual IC's of RAM comes with an IC socket.

Simple solution... don't buy one.
Basic 'repairs' or upgrades like memory, drives or batteries should
be user serviceable without custom tools.

The typical Apple user is so technologically behind the curb that he can't even figure that out. A bigger consideration for the Apple fanboy is whether his laptop housing matches the scarf he will wear when he visits Starbucks and sits in the most visible spot of the store, or whether the silver ring he wears matches the shiny finish of his laptop. And of course let us not forget that among technological morons the Apple logo means a great deal. That is the level at which Apple's prisoners interact with their devices.

Its funny, and I've said it thousands of times. If you don't like Apple, or their products, why did you even click on the link to this article? Does it make you better to hate in groups? Does insulting someone because of their choice in computer products make you feel more "techy" or more "informed". You guys really have it together. Instead of living your life and not focusing on other peoples product choices(which shouldn't concern you at all, if you have a life), you guys follow any link that afford you the chance to "bomb" on some Apple "fanboys". Because if you ever buy something, you're a complete "fanboy". I'm personally a toilet paper, toothpaste and food "fanboy". I also have several Apple devices, so I'm also an Apple "fanboy". But, I have several "PC's"(like a computer made from Apple isn't a personal computer), so does that make me also a Microsoft "fanboy"? And if it does, does that mean I'm not a true Apple "fanboy"? I'm just thinking I could get some answers since you guys have nothing else to do, obviously. Seriously, guys, if you don't like something, leave it at that. Why waste your time on something you feel so strongly against? Is it supposed to sway potential Apple "fanboys" into being Microsoft "fanboys" instead? Do you really think you ranting on here is doing any good for you, or your "cause"? Oh, and by the way, if I have any money to blow, I'm going to go buy a Macbook with Retina display and post pictures just to spite you guys, and then I'm going to laugh at you morons when you're on the Apple threads hating some more. Isn't there a more worthy cause that you could focus your attention on?

If you got the money and you want to blow it on an apple, fine, I just buy cheep PCs, I get a new laptop each year, got a cheep toshiba used it for a year, Toshiba never updates the drivers (HD Graphics) and other crappy Toshiba System software( Toshiba Value added package should be called Toshiba Value subtracted package), so I get an ASUS U56E on sale the next year, I use the Toshiba as a backup! The ASUS U56E's key letters are starting to ware off after one year, so I get some stickers to fix that, The ASUS is an ok laptop, It has one USB 3.0 port and gigabit ethernet. The drivers for the USB 3.0 not so hot with USB 2.0 thumb drives, but at least the ASUS has updateable Intel HD graphics drivers! I have just purchased a SAMSUNG series 3 laptop this year, It has a Sandy Bridge CORE i7 quad processor and It was on sale $449.00 It does not have USB 3.0 but It also has gigabit ethernet, so I just run the cat5 cable to the ASUS and backup to the goflex USB 3.0 drive I have connected to the USB 3.0 port on the ASUS, Funny thing My SYSYEM IMAGE backups seem to be faster from my Samsung through the Gigabit ethernet to the ASUS's USB 3.0 port, than my system image backups form the ASUS to its own usb 3.0 port! Hay, but I only buy PCs when they are on sale. I think I'll put Linux on the Toshiba laptop And use it as a file server/video streaming box. All my laptops still work and I still have not spent as much $$ as one macbook pro! I just think most laptop OEM's are crap, with their poorly written drivers, and there lack of service after the sale. I just can not understand WHY Intel would let the OEM's customize the INTEL HD GRAPHICS DREVERS! Intel GPUs will never replace descrete graphics for gamers. Intel you should spend more resources helping/requireing Your OEM partners to keep your HD graphics drivers updated! I will never spend more than $600 on a laptop. none of the laptop OEM's design them to last long, and none of the laptop OEM's really take advantage of all the abilities of the hardware that comes with their computers.

[citation][nom]nebun[/nom]why are there so many apple haters?...is it because they can't afford quality products and have to settle for the lowest bidder?[/citation]

I find that comment amusing - Considering everyone can afford real quality products from for instance Asus who at this moment have least failed laptops of all major brands, including the overpriced fruity computers who fares worse. So anyone can afford real quality products and also get better performance in the price segment of the above - So there are tree strong arguments - Better quality, better performance and also access to the biggest eco system of software/services. The windows platform enjoy 90% of the worlds computers while the fruity only have a mere 5% and that reflects in the share of software to run on it. Hard to match that offer if the customer is clever!

But by all means - Go ahead, pay for a sport car but end up with a mediocre performing car that is more likely to end up at the garage if you like because of the brand - that is the power of choice (or is it marketing?).

So the comment above should more accurately have been "why are there so many apple haters?...is it because they can get quality performance products and don't have to settle for the highest bidder?"

BTW my psychology teacher would have called this the Stockholm brand syndrome, purchase something really expensive - Find out it performed worse than the lower priced competition but then defend it no matter what!

I personally don't hate Apple, but I don't use Apple either. I just hate the Apple zelot who likes to insult non Apple users and think their Mac is superior and they are superior for having one.

I will forgive some of the behavior, as you get the same treatment from Apple haters, who really aren't any better.

I used to love this site. It seems now than when anyone makes a positive comment regarding Apple it receives instant hatred. I've owned my own business building quality desktops for a few years now, but I love my Retina MBP. Just because something is intuitive and easy to use doesn't mean it's terrible. Yes, with $1000 you can purchase a great, quality PC. Preferring a Macbook Pro over an ASUS doesn't make you ignorant or illogical. I recommend both ASUS laptops and MBP's to my friends and customers, depending on their situation. PC's and Mac's are both great, and the presence of both of them on the consumer market is what delivers quality products.

I know people with Apple laptops that have to take them and get them repair for various reasons. And the laptops are only a couple years old. I'd rather have a $400 laptop that I can easily repair when it fails than a $2000 pain in the a$$ piece of crap.

The majority of the laptops that I repair are not due to cheap construction, but due to user abuse. It doesn't matter if it's an expensive Apple or a cheap Acer, neither are going to wistand Jr. from stepping on the screen, or dropping it while it's running and messing-up the HDD.

Unfortunately, because of Apple's trend to make the products more and more difficult to service, people's only recourse is to take it to an Apple store - something that's quite a pain when the nearest store is over a 100 miles away.

Granted, Apples have fewer problems with viruses, but much of that has been because they've been less targeted due to their lack of popularity. Times have been changing though, and with the increase in Apple popularity, so has the threat of viruses for Apples.

[citation][nom]rantoc[/nom]Find that list amusing considering that Asus usually is the "low price" brand in the list (beside Acer), choose the components wisely and quality will follow![/citation]
Are you sure about that? There's a reason why ASUS is amongst the most preferred in the Tech community as opposed to ECS 😛

well apple wants you to pay their price for memory not market price thats why they soldered it on the board.

i bought 8 gigs of ram from new egg for my MBP for like 65 dollars apple wanted 300 because it was "certified". lol

Fact of the matter is the average computer user (Probably not anyone on this site!) will never take their computer apart or complete self repairs.

You'll probably find a large proportion of mac users aren't 'Stupid' , they just have the money to pay for a machine & service, that simplifies things so that they can get on with their lives. Most of my university lecturers, friends, and even my parents cannot be bothered to take their laptop apart at all! Apple make it simple by being able to repair your computer in store and having someone to talk to face to face.
From experience the biggest problem I've had with laptops are GPU's, Mainboard, & Screen damage which to be perfectly honest I wouldn't bother replacing anyway! You would have to replace the part anyway so the only thing you would pay for is the labour if you send it off.

Quite frankly if you are spending that much money on a laptop, it would be a rather silly move to NOT buy the 3 year guarantee with it.
The plus side of applecare is that once you've bought it you can add other purchases onto it. We have 3 MacBook Pro's (including said retina) and a thunderbolt display all covered by one £300 3 year guarantee so it has worked out £75 per machine! My HP laptop was £150 for an extra 2 year guarantee for ONE machine only.

For anyone that wishes to call me an apple fanboy I can tell you straight off I have many more self-built windows/Ubuntu self-built (Will NEVER buy pre built) PC's.

Retina does a few good things; It pushes the market to higher res screens, 1080 has been around for long enough

The laptop is 1080 retina is just a buzz word dumb people latch onto and spend money for even though its meaningless. since retina has no real standard I can see since it can be from 200ppi to over 500ppi just about any device on the market today can be considered retina.

I can't imagine any Apple fanboi/fangurl having the guts to actually open up their MBP and following the instructions in this article. They'll probably faint at the sight of a screwdriver.
