Imaging Old HDD to new HDD.

Hello,

My current HDD is experiencing SMART bad status errors. I know this mean that my current HDD is failing. However I have a brand new one as back up in case of these things. I've never imaged HDD's before and I heard it's effective. I currently don't have any OS software lying around, and the current OS on my current HDD isn't a genuine copy of Windows Vista.

Can anyone here provide some step by step comprehensive strategy in imaging please.
