Improve PC audio quality.

Hi, I have a windows 7 pc with mother board asus p8h77-m pro. Audio quality is decent. Can it be improved with an external sound card. How can I quantifiy the audio quality of the onboard sound card? And how will an external sound card improve the quality? If will be great if someone can explain these. My advance thanks.

My personal experience of reasonably priced sound cards over on-board sound is little difference (like for like channels). I've found more value in better quality headphones or speakers. Of course, the odd sound chip can be buggy or hissy, but that might be faulty hardware, bad drivers, bad config and so on.

Having said all that, I'm no acoustic expert. Some folk are ludicrously sensitive to sound quality.
