In Dell Hell!!!!!!!!

I woke up yesterday to my pc (Dell Dimension 4400) saying it was unable to boot up something to do with missing a system file (I believe windows/system32) i may be forgetting something else in there. I tried to press "R" to repair it it did not work so I re installed XP but not over the old version because I did not want to lose all the data on my hard drive. But now I can see all the data but I can not access any of it. I can not figure out how to regain my previous settings or to put all my favorite links back into my favorites folder. I can access them and even click on them and they open up from my windows folder. But when I try and import or export them into IE it will not allow me to. It says cannot find c:\Documents and Setting\Favorites\Favorites\Favorites\.htm and when I try and look into my other folders from the previous configuration it says c:\Documents and Settings\KevinAnthony is not Accessible Access is Denied! Can anyone help me with this??

dark star, when doing a windows repair... it tries to trick you by putting repair on one of the first menus.... this will take you to the recovery console and i highly doubt any average computer user has any idea what to do once in the recovery console.

you instead need to make like you're going to reinstall and then at the next prompt you will again get an option to repair, choose it and it while do a repair installation and all of your data and programs will be left intact.
