I prefer a monthly subscription if nothing else to keep the riff raff out. I have been playing The Saga of Ryzom on and off for going on 7 years. The community averages about 35 years of age, and I've met peeps of all ages from other players kids to great-grandmothers.
I mostly enjoy the "community" which is for the most part "self regulated" and love the total absence of "classes". With 63 skills to master, there's plenty of things left to do .... sure I need a break now and then but I'm almost always back within a week of "new content" showing up.
If you only play when new content is released in Ryzom, then you cant have played it since about 2005.
The gameworld looks great and the price is very cheap compared to sub MMO's, but the amount of complaining and drama has caused people to leave in droves, whole guilds leaving at a time.
I think one guild still owns most of the outposts due to bots and multiboxing.and there arent enough people on the server to contest them doing this.
Try Battleground Europe. No grind, but it will probably be the most difficult game you will ever play. The learning curve is so steep many people just cannot play it and be consistently good at it. Anyway if you like realism, non HP damage models, and war simulation you will like if you can make it through the early struggles of a new player.
Sounds like I might be at least arsed to try. The learning curve had me reminisce for a brief moment how nice EVE online was, when everything was unknown, but even then I got bored after about a year of subscription (Which was a record length for me. Second place was about 3 months).
No Darkspace eh? google it. Fun and free (as in beer). Relies on donations or donated subscriptions that give a few extra benefits, but are not even remotely required to play and have a blast.
I'm really surprised the Allods did not make this list. It's easily the best free 2 play game out right now with content that rivals WoW which is also strangely absent. This list seems a little dated with some odd choices made.
