Worst PC I ever worked on was at a saw mill. Bottom third of the machine was nothing but saw dust. It would overheat and shut off. Vacuumed out the machine and it worked for another 5 years.

Same here. I would be out right on the spot.

There really needs to be like a "PC Nightmares" show on like TLC or one of those channels. Hey they've got a slot open now that Honey Boo Boo was cancelled!

Tip, when Windows gets it's Monthly Update, be sure to Shut Down your system and do a monthly De-Dusting if your computer, I know I do that for sure.

I bought a few PCs at a garage sale a few years ago. Set them in my basement. It took six months to finally get rid of the cockroaches.

That's a good example of what I meant about how fires can start. It's a wonder the sawmill
didn't burn to the ground...

Ian.

PS. How long has it been & the comments stuff still doesn't work properly?? Multiple posts,
voting on the .co.uk site always kicks one back to the first post, voting on the .com site often
doesn't work at all (or it gives an error), or the .com site can't bring up the comments anyway...

There's no way I would use an air compressor to clean out these because guess what? I don't want that dust to then go into my lungs, especially not the brown kind which probably came from a smoker. That's like instant lung cancer right there; tons of cigarettes in one dose.

Dang, if I only had a camera at the time. I went into a cardboard box factory once to service an HP computer that had a dot matrix printer. There was literally 4 inches of cardboard fibers inside the printer with some areas where the fan blew it to 6 inches deep. The printer was working fine, btw. as long as the dust is non conductive, most machines live through massive amounts of crud.

Wow, these pictures just show how robust the hardware actually is if it can survive this kind of treatment
Kinda right there. Personally, I would have thought that most of these computers would have blackscreened due to heat LONG before they got that bad and someone would have noticed the issue..

I do computer repair. One customer brought in a machine that stopped working. It was FULL of brown powder. The fans had stopped and it overheated. It was used in a flour mill.
I can always tell if the owner's a smoker. I'm working on one like that right now; it would easily fit in your list. Oh, and the smell...
Funny, I've cleaned computers where someone in the house has smoked around it and there is no smell to it. Listen.... cigarette smoke RISES when it comes out of your mouth. So most of the residue would get on the walls and roof, not inside the computer which usually sits on the floor.
When someone says "This computer is so filthy because this person is a heavy smoker!" I take out my pictures of the computer from an extremely heavy smokers house that was spotless and say "You still want to say that? No, this yellow stuff is not nicotine and the impurities from the cigarette smoke, it is from something else."

I couldn't help crying while wandering "Mine are so clean I can't tell a thing..." ~20, I guess. A little better organized than those in picture #26, though... Seriously, I have found some weirdness when repairing computers around here, like ants, mice and heavy dust, but I've never seen a frog laying over a PCB (is that an AGP board?).

have to make sure to clean the resin out of my system every couple weeks. too close to my smoking desk. when your stash gets low all you need to do is run prime95 for a couple hours and the room fills with bong-resin smoke.

Wow, these were a good laugh! Tom's should make this a weekly thing, post and compare pictures of nasty systems. At the very least, it makes most of us feel better when we're mad at ourselves for missing a cleaning on our rigs hahaha!
